Colorado B/S Thread

Re: The Colorado BS thread

i like my lifted XJ without a sway bar. it doesnt lean much at all on hard turns.
lifted toyotas however.............. SCARY WITHOUT a sway bar.

i can honestly say that the only time have ever been scared on the road in a lifted vehicle was a 88 toyota 4 runner. it didnt have a sway bar, every turn felt like it was going over.
F a yota without a sway bar!

ok.... F a yota with or without a swaybar! lol

Re: The Colorado BS thread

would you use a stock sway bar on a tough trail?

how about racing through the desert?

how about when you are dickin off in the penrose commons or anywhere OFFROAD?

no. why?

cuz it doesnt allow the suspension to do what it needs to

why in the hell does anyone think street driving is harder than off road driving?

Yes

yes

probably

If you've got perfectly balanced suspension front to rear a swaybar won't help offroad much. Rear too stiff, body follows the back and overworks the front.. bandaid it with a swaybar. Yeah, you pick up tires more and put stress in the unibody. It beats uncontrolled droop pulling you off a sidehill though.

Back on the road, control is a good thing. No swaybar and short arms, you're hoping for no surprises. A bike rider is a good match for a rig like that. Look wayy down the road, cause evasive action ain't going to be pretty.

Re: The Colorado BS thread

Mike I think one of Troys points is an insurance company will look for any reason to deny a claim. Running without a swaybar is just another reason for them to deny a claim no matter how worthless it may be. This could result in you having to pay a large amount of money out of pocket.

Not even so much as reason to hope they won't deny a claim........... I wouldn't want a laundry list of things wrong with the vehicle I was operating on the public roads..... that does nothing but help the court/jury see you as a reckless/careless vehicle operator.

It's all physics Mike. Ya can't justify not using a sway bar off road and expect to justify not using one on road. Speeds are higher on road. Speed and velocity affect pitch and yaw. It also affects traction and friction. Aerodynamics will also affect center of gravity as the air presses down more on the vehicle as it's moving faster. Ya hammer on the brakes and jerk the wheel to avoid an object in your path at road speeds, the sudden slowing raises the vehicle's center of gravity and weight distribution front to rear changes substantially. You don't get those dynamics to that degree crawlin on rocks.

Off road, a sway bar prohibits good suspension flex...... something you don't want on road during an evasive maneuver.

Mike, since your rig is already pretty hammered..... :D....... go set up a video camera in a parking lot and set up a few cones. Go drive slalom through the cones at trail speed, then go try and drive the same slalom at 30 mph. And if you're brave enough and the rig is still rubber side down, again at 50 mph.

Prove us all wrong that you can maintain solid, safe control of your rig without that sway bar........ but please wear a brain bucket...... just in case.... :D

Re: The Colorado BS thread

understear? just like wheeling, hitting the brakes ad freaking out will screw you. sometimes applying the gas is whats right
"when in doubt throttle out"

get the ass end to step out and that eliminates the understear
so, instead of relyin on the damn sway bar to help save my ass, ive learned to calm the XXXX down in an emergency situation and not just hop to slamming the brakes and swerving....(do that on a bike and i guarantee you die in the first 6 months) apply it to any vehicle, specifically a lifted jeep, and you tend not to lose your ass in panic

If you have to get on the brakes due to a car stopping or some other unexpected object, how do you "throttle out"? Where do you "throttle out" to?
I have driven without a sway bar for a while now (because I broke one of my lower mounting points on a rock, oops) and I haven't flopped either but why wouldnt you want to give yourself every chance for success in an emergency situation. Mine is going back on as soon as I can lay under a Jeep again.

My biggest question, Mike is why not just say "I don't use one" and leave it at that. Why does everyone else that uses a sway bar have to be stupid?

Troy, the insurance/ liability thing is not something I thought of before but it is a very good point.

I've always been against helmet laws even though I wear a helmet because I felt that that helmet laws interfere with natural selection. Now I am going to add sway bars to that theory.

I deserve that and fully expected it. I'll admit I am stupid for taking so long to repair mine.
I can assure you that MY Jeep handles better with one on the road than without and the sooner I fix it, the safer I will be.

Now if it's ok with you, I have to go pee in a cup.
