Code Scanners/Readers

Anybody have anything to say about any type of code reader/scanner?
I am talking about the type you plug into your computer to read the check engine light messages. I know about the ability to read the codes without one, but it would also be useful on the wife's car too.

What is the difference in the $100 models and the $200 units?

Thank you

Well, as far as I know, different cars have different diagnostic systems, in the early to mid 90's I THINK (I'm not positive) they standardized at OBD (OnBoard Diagnostic) or OBD, now they use OBDII and III. Some scaners are only for certian systems, and older computer controlled cars (take my 87 Renix Jeep for example) have a real old system, its hard to find a scaner that can still work with them. I'd say the $200 dollar models are capable of working with newer systems, and possibly capable of clearing codes.

From the 80s to late 95 cars were using mostly obd 1 and from 96 on every body uses the obd 2 standard. The amount of money you spend is directly related to how many different cars you will be able to plug into and scan. The other differances you will find are, that some scanners are just code readers. Some have the ability to give the operator real time data, and the ability to make adjustments to some computer set points. Some can read ABS systems,Air bag systems, and emission systems. I would look for one that will do the things you need and is capable of being upgraded.
