Clrusty's new ride - WrenchFest Oct 8th

as long as we keep it 21spline-21spline or 23spline-23spline, either should mate up. Yours came as a 23 spline vintage, and I know there's a speed sensor change (or two) during that period, so I'd assume we're looking for late model 23 spline stuff.

Ideally I would imagine you'd like to find them from the same year, or atleast from the same range that would be 100% bolt in electronically, especially for the transmission electronics. If i'm not mistaken, I think 00-01 has the same plugs, 99 has it's own, and 97-98 have their own.

As for 231 or 242, both are good. I have a 242 in mine and it's never given me a bit of trouble...on or off road. Plus that full time feature is quite handy given the types of winters we have here. All about your preference.

I stopped and looked at the XJ today. Looks good and to be a southern rig. I didn't see any nasty rust or corrosion. It does have an interesting grill repair but I think we have you covered for a header panel if one isn't already lined up.

Can you find out from your friend what year AW4 he is building? Or get the rear output spline count? It will be either a 21 or 23 spline.

Sent my donation to the Paypal account tonight. It wasn't as much as I wanted to send, but I know it will help. Hopefully in a couple weeks when I get paid again I can send a little more.

Matt bring your vac disco axle save us some time swapping gears and what not.

whats the deal with the header? i have lots of late model front end stuff... but no good header panels. just grills and lights and such.

The current header has some issues with it and I'm not sure if it's gonna be usable. The passenger side headlight appears to be held in place with bondo. Looks like a front passenger impact at some time or another.

It may be salvagable but not sure. If someone has a '97+ header panel we might need it.

I'll bring my axle and I'm in the same boat as David, lots of parts for the front end but no good shell.

I havent read through all 12 pages, but I have a 231 23 spline up for donation if its needed for this build.

I am out of town on the build weekend though, so Im not sure how to get it up there...

welll yall the trans fell through. YellowX's buddy wasnt able to get ahold to the trans after all. so im realy not sure what to say about the spline count.

ok well i have things all mixed up here. Eric, Ed said the trans you had he was having rebuilt. i was confused to the whole thing..sorry yall..

According to kastein's AW4 thread, we're gonna need a 98-01 AW4 to do the swap due to a slightly different design that requires machining.

Copied from the first post in the thread:

If you have a 1998-2001 XJ:

1987-1997 AW4s are not going to work without significant machine work. Reason is that your TCU is expecting an input speed sensor signal, but the mounting boss for the ISS is not machined out on the donor transmission housing and the rotor needed is not installed in the geartrain. You will be fully disassembling the donor transmission, doing specialized machining on the housing, swapping some parts from your old transmission, and basically doing a massive amount of work to swap in a non-ideal part. I would not suggest this swap unless you are really, really screwed and don't care that your CEL will be going off and you will have to leave the transmission unplugged from the wiring harness and shift it manually, with no second gear available. This swap is also fine if you are going to be building a trail only rig, don't care about your CEL going off all the time, and will be installing a custom shifter setup. You could also swap in a proper-year manual transmission XJ ECU and install a custom shifter setup to avoid a CEL.

Rredalty said he had a line on a trans and thought is was a 98.

Cool, I just remembered reading that thread and seeing that. Wanted to make sure we don't run into an issue.

I'm prob closest to you. What year is it from? We need one from a 98 and up due to the speed sensor.

The trans needs to be 98 to 01. The t-case just needs to be 23 spine input.

Ah see I thought the tcase speed sensor type was different but I guess it doesn't matter if it's the gear type or the magnetic type as long as it's sending a signal
