clanking noise somewhere in the bell housing??

i have an 84 cherokee 2.8 v6 and when i crank it up there is a strange clanking noise coming from inside the bell housin, at first i thought it might be the exaust clanking but its not that, I was wondering if anyone has this happen before, any info would be great.

If it's an auto, perhaps the torque converter bolts have backed out, or the flex plate is cranked. It's a common problem on the 4.0's and the AW4 tranny, but I don't know how common this would be on the V6 engines. Easy enough to pull the inpsection cover and have a look, though.
