if the axle is from a 97 it should be 29 spline. if from a 96 and earlier it should be 27 spline

96 could be either, depending on date of mfg. My 96 is a 29 spline.

my 96 is a 27 spline. the Jeep catalog shows it should have been 29 spline. mine was 100% untouched when i bought it.
