Soooo.. yesterday coming home from a trip I hear a whining noise in the rear end.. or more like a hum when I am on the gas.. coasting it went away..
I was 20 miles from home and it was getting louder and turned to a grinding noise.. obviously the 35 has given itself up..
Get home and pop the cover.. one of the carrier bearings had destroyed itself.
I just installed a new bearing and took it for a test drive.
On the gas it is totally quiet.. off the gas.. a humming noise.. or like a low(tone)/fast(frequency) vibration..
The ring gear was damaged on the coast side of the teeth.. the edge had been rounded off..
So now my question is.. is this okay to drive on temporarily. I have tommorrow off work and can drive out to the pickapart and get a whole new axle assembly.. but it is a 100 mile drive..
I took the cover back off and the bearing are okay, backlash is the same after the test drive. So I am pretty confident the ring gear is the culprit..
