Chevy Problems

I just bought a '98 Z71 a few weeks ago.

5.7 V-8

Today I think my head gasket went out.

I was going out of town, and my temp gauge stopped working, the truck heated up. and basically just turned off.

The engine bay area smelt burnt. It lost all of the water in the radiator.

I got it brought back home via a wrecker.

I filled the radiator up with water, and checked all the other fluids, tried starting it up... It was cranking nasty at first, nasty noises.

It finally started up slow, which brought my hopes up, knowing that i didn't seize my engine. Water then started coming out of my muffler. The radiator is losing all the water. The truck is running really sh!tty, but it does start up slowly.

I'm going to get a mechanic to look at it tomorrow, but hopefully someone here can tell me what is going on. I know almost nothing about Chevy's.

You may have a severe head gasket leak, into the cylinder. It could also be a crack in the head, or a crack in the bore itself. Is thier water in your oil? You may have blown rings in one or more cylinders. When the head gasket went on my old C10, the engine started smoking blue after I replaced it. When I tore it down, the oil control ring was broke in 3 places. That was the cylinder where the leak occured. It may be an expensive repair, just for a heads up.

The oil didn't look watery to me.

How much are $$$ are you talking about?

You think it'd be easier and cheaper to just get a short block? Assuming that what you said happened to me.....

carefull, if the water in your exhaust is coming your engine you have problems. I've never heard of a warped head/blown gasket leak enough into the cylinder to hydro lock it, but if the water in your exhaust is from the engine it is possible. if the block is cracked then it doesnt matter if it hydro locking. do a compression test to see what it could be.

It doesn't have to actually hydro lock, it can generate enough steam to do almost the same thing.
I finally got tired of blowing up trannies and tearing down the motor in my K1500 and parked it in the dirveway. Bought another XJ.
Only good thing about that truck was the handling. IFS handles well and takes the bumps good (within reason). I never did manage to get it stuck in the mud, the limted slip rear end and the 4X made it an able off roader. Just never could keep it running very long without major repairs and it was a gas guzzler. I'd never buy another.
Funny my K1500 is pretty much dead and my 1971 K30 is still going strong.

All of the funny noises when you cranked mean something,you burned the engine up.Anything can be repaired if you want to spend enough,but you are looking at a new motor,really.Wish you luck and hope I'm wrong,but I don't think I am.:doh:
