Just swap out the t-case and put in a new t-case shifter from 242 vehicle.
I'm a big fan of the 242 for daily drivers, but, they will not provide more traction than a 231. They just have a setting that has basically a "differential" in the t-case so the front and rear drive shafts can turn at different speeds without any binding. This does allow you to leave it in 4wd on dry pavement or whatever. But "part time" setting still gives you the most traction.
Also the 242 hangs down lower. But it is still a strong reliable transfer case.
Thanks for the info. Actually, as far as traction goes, I meant traction on the street since I'm planning on doing some substantial performance mods to my XJ.
