Was getting report of misfire cylinder 3. Figured just heat soak. New jeep to me do I change the pugs this morning and now Idle is wonky. Have to pick up daughter at school. Man why do I do things when I don't have a backup car. I took the coil rail off to get at plugs. Plugged everthing back in right. The plug covers on coil rail are on and tight. Don't quite know what went wrong. Engine on occasion would idle funny. This was my next replacement since getting my Jeep. Exhaust has droplets. To me seems one or two are misfiring. Also when I hit the gas pedal the wonkiness levels out. Any Help would be appreciated.

Don't buy into the ultra plattinum laser nuclear yadda yadda yadda series of plugs for your XJ. Champion Coppers (P/N 438) are the plug of choice for many on here, as that's what came in most XJ's from factory. I believe i've heard some say that NGK's came in the 00-01 XJ's when they went to coil pack ignition. Do some research on that first and see. Definitely keep it simple though on the plug.

Personally, I put Champion Coppers in when I bought my Jeep 5 years ago at 62K. I just did another tune up last week now that i'm at 136K (so a little over 70K on the first set I put in). They looked great when they came out and the Jeep is running like a champ still with the new ones in.

Champions up through 99, 00-01 changed to NGKs.

Cylinder 3 miss fire is usually related to heat soak. Do a search, plenty of posts on it. Dealership fix was a insulation wrap for the injector--HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!

Search for someone that the insulation wrap fixed the problem, there aren't many.

Muddeprived recently went through this and ended up with an electronic timer to run the fan after shutting the engine off for a predetermined time--he says it fixed his problem.

I have had good results in every vehicle that I have had with using either NGK v-powers, or NGK laser platinums. Both are a good choice for the XJ.

Ok I took out the e3's. Went to get some NGK spark plugs website said they had some got there and they were out. I Bought Bosch Platinum Plus plugs. Instal went quickly done it three times today. Engine is running better than ever. Here are some pics of the e3 spark plugs taken from my engine.

Those things make me mad just lookin' at em.

Bosch Plats have caused a problem or two as well. Good to hear it's running better but if it acts up jump over to NGK or basic Autolite.

Not real sure why they're so grumpy with plugs.. waste spark systems run the current backwards on half the plugs and they're notoriously touchy.
The 4.0 is either typical distributor or individual coils in a rail, no reverse current, and still touchy.

Something in a TSB--and damned if I can find it--about the 00-01 DIS and platinum plugs but I can't remember what it was.

I also stick to boring plugs, champions preferably. Working at a auto parts store I see the outcome of fancy plugs and lots of unhappy people spending 7 bucks a plug. Especiall with these 4.0's. Not a big fan o bosch patinums either. Only consistent good things I head are on basic ngk's and champions!

they throw a check engine code 50% of the time.... dealer told me to run the oe plug on all the 00-current jeeps we had 3 jeeps last year toss a code after doing a tune up when using non oe plugs.... (i work as a service technician)

On the test run with the bosch plugs I was happy with the performance. I will have to wait till pay day to buy another set of plugs. I will buy ngks. Hopefully these will continue to perform well. If so I will have a set on hand. First E3's then Bosch if they go bad, they sure made some cash off of me lately.

Working at an auto parts store as well I agree, which is why I always try to sell the customer what the OE plug is for their vehicle. Had a 4.0 TJ come in last weekend with a misfire on #3 after a tune up with Autolite Platinums. Suggested he go with Champion Coppers...haven't seen him back in the store since so I'm assuming the Champion's did the trick for him.

When I bought my 92 it had Bosch Plats. They were crap as the insulators were gone!
I always have and always will run Champs in my 4.0. For coil overs it is critical that you use OEM plugs or plugs with equivalent resistance. How are you going to figure that out? Use OEM plugs!

I have three vehicles running e3's. I have seen what they can do for gas mileage and performance. From now on I will stick to oem plugs. The whole experience has put a sour taste in my mouth and pocket book. I have sent them an email. Seriously doubt I will get a reply.

Its amazing isn't it? You think this little metal and ceramic thing just makes a spark, how could it go wrong! Time and time again that is proven wrong. Anyway, i've been running Autolite XP's in my Renix 4.0 for almost 3 years with no issues. I actually sunk it and hydrolocked the engine, changed the engine and I am still using the same plugs.

Going to all the trouble of replacing an engine that you hydroed, then reusing the plugs that were in the hydroed motor because you are too cheap to spend another $10.

What? I pulled the motor out sat. night and dropped the other one in sunday and drove it by sunday evening. You've apparantly never swapped a motor in an XJ because they are REAL simple to do. The plugs were only a year old and weren't cheap plugs. I worked at a parts store at the time so they were discounted but they were still probably $25. Knowing what I know now I wouldn't bother buying expensive plugs but they were good so I reused them. Wolfpack.....more like the brains of a flock of birds.:moon:

I think I agree with wolfpack on this one. If changing the engine is super simple, that means that changing the plugs must be a 15-30 second job. Glad it worked out for you though. Your risk payed off...to the tune of a $10 savings haha
