Changed the oil and now the engine ticks.

Can I change all the rockers and pushrods over from the other engine or are they matched to the lifters?

I ran it again after another friend said the rockers might not start oiling right away and may take a minute or 2 to build up pressure. I put a bit of oil in each rocker to keep it lubbed while we ran it. After a minute or 2 the one we replaced seemed to trickle just a bit of oil.

I was thinking of pulling all the rockers and pushrods and sealing the ports that lead back down into the engine (around the pushrods is the only ones I can see). Then scrubing and cleaning all of the head, and reassmebling and running a flush of some sort to see if I can get a good flow out of the lifters. If that doesn't work pull the head and inspect the lifters.

Should I just skip that and pull the head and clean it and check the lifters right away?

And some pics, I told you it was nasty.

The clean looking rockers are the ones out of my buddies doner engine we can use for parts.

Hell I guess if we are pulling heads we might as well just swap them but I was still trying to avoid that.

The rockers and push rods are OK to swap from engine to engine. To clean up those rockers and parts, get a 5 gallon bucket, get a gallon of Castrol SuperClean degreaser. Fill the bucket with about a quart or so of Superclean and hot water. Dump the parts in and let them soak for a couple of hours. You will be surprised how clean the parts come.

By the way, that is one dirty engine. You must live where it is real humid. Also check that the vent line from the valve cover to the air cleaner box is free and clear. The gunk you have is from the oil reacting to water. The vent should keep that to a minimum.

diesel also works pretty well to clean up nasty if you've got some on hand.
Damn, that's one fugly valvetrain.

Not more humid then most places as far as I know. Just Northern Ontario.

Yep the line was clear last time I checked (both actually) but I'll recheck.

I do ALOT of short trips though. I do a 6km loop every morning and some evenings to drop off the wife and kid at daycare and work. It just heats up to operating temp in that time.

We are wondering if someone put some additive in along time ago and it went all nasty.

After its all cleaned up and changed and the new/used rockers and rods are in and I try it out and see if it starts pumping oil. The rods should slowly spin right? Cause all my old ones are but the new ones don't seem to be.

As for dumping the parts in. Arn't they matched to the rocker and such so I should keep them matched up?

X3, cost about $10 in my area. Might be a little high for an oil filter, but if it does its job and I don't have to worry about it, thats an extra few bucks i'm willing to spend.

Untill you get that mess cleaned up just cheap filters and change the oil and filter ofter. Ues the dextron and change oil and filter every 500 miles.
Do it about 3 times the put Good oil and filter in it, the every 3000 miles.

So should I swap rockers and pushrods from that other engine? I'm wondering if any others have been fatigued at all or anything.

Is varsol cool to use to clean up, thats whats in the parts cleaning tanks in a shop right?

I was talking to my dad and he was saying thats what they used for doing an engine flush.
