I have a sunroof and have my antenna mounted just in fron of it. My '89 Larado came with the factory remote door locks. They have long ago quit working. My CB ant is mounted in the roof right above the module for remote locks. The cable goes along the windsheild,down the pillar to the floor, under teh driver;s seat, over the hump to the radio. Works very well and i can achieve VERY low SWRs with a Cobra 29 and 6ft whip with center load coil.

mine's mounted to the factory roof rack with a clamp style mount. It's a wilson super flexy antenna thingy and has been doing great. Only thing is I had to ground it under one of the roof rails because the rack isn't actually a ground.

In English, I simply snaked some 18-gauge hookup wire up the roof rack rails on either side, and used crimp terminals to attach them to two of the four bolts on the clamp bracket. Works pretty well.

did anyone else follow the guide provided with the taillight mount? I just got the mount but I was wondering how you got the wire through the rubber grommet under the taillight coming from the antenna...I was about to start popping panels but I thought I'd check first hehe

you can remove all of the interior panels without too much difficulty. just use a knife or something to punch a small hole in the grommet. just remember to seal the hole with silicone when you're done. also, don't let the wire loop up, it'll mess up the signal somehow.

I just used an X-acto knife to make a small hole.
Note; my side mount antennas(I have one on each side, 2meter on the right and CB on the left) are still there after some much harder wheelin this summer, I'm carefull around trees but so far so good.

haha yea i didnt actually mean "how" do u get the wire through; I just cut a slit with a knife but getting the cord through from the other side was what I was asking...I'll try pulling that interior panel off tonight and hopefully it goes back on ok

Seriously, if you're anywhere with trees, that will not last and the damage it may do could be expensive.
For what it's worth, I run mine from the under the front hood and opposite of the regular antenna. It helps keep limbs off the windshield and has worked well for seven years.
Another buddy has his zip tied to the roof rack. It looks goofy but never snags on anything and he can pop it vertical for longer range work.

How do you guys keep your mount from bending backwards? I also mad mine but after highway speeds I get out and look and my mount slightly bends backwards. With a spring mounted the antenna slaps the side of the XJ. Whats up?

for keeping vertical, I just made sure the hex bolts were tight. 90mph on highway with a 4' wilson antenna and a trail flag on the top. stays up! I've been running it for a year. If you have a ridig antenna like mine, just gotta remember to loosen the bolts a little if you're doing trails with trees so it won't put too much pressure on the antenna.

Yep our group does, Last time out of the 30 rigs that went 20 or so were on channel 4, makes the ride more fun. Good for the ride to and from the trail as well if someone is having mechanical difficulties.
CB's are useless for any real emergencies on the trail, the range here in the mountains isn't far enough. Cell signal sucks, 2 meter is the way to go for safety.

nothing wrong with it, as long as you get a flexible antenna. same thing for the rear mount, gotta have a flexible antenna if you want it to hit branches and survive. for purchasing... http://www.google.com/search?q=firestik+mk-174

I used a side mounted ball, a rigid antenna, and a spring. Alot less monkeying around with grommets, feeding coax thru holes in tailights and such. Zap one hole with the hole saw, three small ones for the bolts and your are done....

Realistically, though, if you're wheeling anywhere with trees about the only thing that's going to likely cause a minimum of damage is a magmount since it'll just get knocked over. Mind you, I have seen one (roof-mounted) break loose on a low branch, put a golf ball pattern of dimples in the roof while the antenna was in the tree and the Jeep was moving forward, and finally swing down and shatter the driver's side cargo area window with the base.
Granted, that's probably a freak circumstance - but it's equally possible to lose mirrors, roof rails, bumper caps, etc. if they get snagged / whacked the right way.
Not saying it hasn't - and I can't match your track record in this regard - but the akrazgpr mount I bought around two years ago has also taken some snags without any noticeable damage other than requiring a periodic respray. He no longer makes them to order, but this should give some idea (left-hand side, immediately above the taillight):
It doesn't stick out a lot - less than the bumper caps, IMHO - and stuff tends to just drag over it rather than snagging. I will admit that my el cheapo flexible wire antenna does a great job of whacking the crap out of anything including the roof within a 4.5' radius, however; no doubt the spring has something to contribute to that...
