I know I have seen it some where but can't find it. Where people take the rear seat out and replace it with wood to make the area level so you can sleep in the cargo area. Thanks

Im at 5'8'' and I fit back there good. Shoot I had 2 other girls in the back with me at the drive in the other weekend LOL.

When I bedlined/sound deadened my interior I went and bought some thick rubber/foam matting and I put it down in the back to help under the carpet and its like memory foam and works good. I havent slept back there but it was comfy watching 2 movies in the back of it LOL...

You could make a removable bed like deal. One that would drop in in 2 peices and sits up around the wheel wells so you have plenty of room. Just some 2x4s and some plywood then a twin mattress or sleeping bag. That would probably be pretty comfy. LOL

But even at 5-8, you're not going to stretch out back there.

Even with the back seat removed and the floor leveled out, it's still only 66 inches from the back of the console to the inside of the hatch.

You'd have to slide the seats all the way forward, and hang your feet over the gap...

The XJ just isn't big enough to serve as a camper...

My gf is 5'1 and I am 6 ft tall and I was juts gana let my feet hang off. I thought it would work I though more people did it guess not. just hate messin with tents.

with my head in one corner and and my feet towards the hatch in the other corner. The 2 girls were laying down and they fit. Sure it weren't too comfortable but it worked.

I normally just throw down a sleepin bag and lay on top of it and cover up with a blanket. I hate tents and if it's only an overnight deal it's fine with me.

12 year olds don't count. :jester:

i used to jeep sleep, BUT i hate unloading my stuff from the hatch, finding a place to put it, then like everyone else said being cramped up to sleep in it, ALSO you gotta look at most of the time every window in ur jeep will collect moisture. keep in mind you WILL have to cuddle lol theres not alot of room in the xj for 2 people side by side, its like sleeping on a twin bed. my tent takes less than 10 minutes to put up, i can keep all my valubles locked in the jeep, for me i gotta keep the ice chest locked in the jeep cuz bears will smell the food... so overall its easier to tent sleep, =) i found a coleman 10x10 tent yesterday at big 5 for 69 dollars regularly 109, with a full rain fly... its pretty decent deal to say the least

I too, being tall cannot fit in the cargo/back seat area. Maybe if I were to keep hatch open and hang off sure. But I do not see it being very comfortable. Just get one of those rooftop tents.

Coleman...best bang for your buck when it comes to tents and just about any other camping gear. Not top of the line, but good value. I have a 50 dollar Coleman tent that has kept me dry in some pretty heavy downpours, and I can stretch out unlike in the back of the jeep. Sets up in a snap, almost literally.

You God Damn HATTERS! Shut up!! Good to know some of you only think orthagonal... Your Jeep is probably going to break because you haven't triangulated any mods and thought it through... What is the diagonal dimension of the back? What if you didnt close the back? What if your looking to make a set up so that you can back country where there are bears? What if you "dont like tents"? What if you just want to built something fun? What if your camping out on rocky terrain? WHAT IF?????

SKIM, good idea I wish that someone posted the link rather than me having to read through 15 people telling you that something possible is not possible... is this in any way what you were looking for? I am guessing not...

I have been thinking it would be cool to make a similar set up with storage under the flat bed. I dont use my back seat normally and having a nice big flat area is cool for gear or whatever... you could have a full size air mattress tucked away and if you wanted a bed you pump it up and you have a bed.

Let me know if you find the link, Im going looking now!

I'm 6'4 and have slept pretty well in my 89.
The keys to it are:
Remove the rear seat cusion and fold the back flat.
Push the front seat all the way up and fold it foward(not possible if you have a four door, the four door seats don't fold foward like the two door front seats)Put your head at the hatch end and let your feet rest on the back of the folded front seat.
I have foam work out mat that I got at wally world and cut to fit the cargo area.Really helps insulate and pad the steel floor.
I'll throw pics up soon.....
