cardan joint rebuild or replace?

The cardan joint in the front driveshaft bound up and tore apart my transfer case. Can I just buy some new U joints and the piece in between them (the parts that are fairly shredded at this point) or do I have to buy a new driveshaft. I heard someone say that is a lifetime non servicable unit.
