Carb clean gun parts?

I know. Military cleaning practices are a funny thing. Here's an interesting article by Pat Rogers...

Bingo. ;) There are many things still passed on from early "OMFG we're gonna run this powder anyway even if Stoner said not to" M16 issues. LOL

My instructors rarely rarely ever do a thorough cleaning (if ever, for some). I've had enough proof and don't care what my drill SGTs did to keep us busy. :smoker:

Hey now! There was a lot of time I would have been napping if it wasn't for all that busy-work.

I am trying to clean an AR15 that I bought used, I gave it a quick clean when I got it but I took the BCG apart the other day and there are some large deposits under the extractor and in the back where the firing pin goes.
I also have a used M1A that needs a proper cleaning.

This is the stuff I wanted to use on the parts of the BCG, except for the extractor.

I heard that if carb cleaner is used on bulueing that it will come out brown but once it is re-oiled it will regain its color. I can't find that site today.

I've used PB Blaster on really gunked up bolts and such before, never hurt a thing. Dunno about Carb Cleaner though.

Why would you want to use that? I don't know how to describe it best but it "Dries up the lube" from within the metal. If you use it, LUBE THOUROUGHLY and then lube again... and again.

There are plenty cleaning solutions for firearms that work well: Hoppes #9 (gotta love the smell), Sweets, Mpro7 to name the few. Each one has pro's and con's to it but it's specifically made for firearms (sometimes it has other applications as well). Bottom line is: you have a firearm that cost you a few $..... take care of it and it will take care of you. That reminds me... time to clean couple guns ;)

I'll stick to the cleaners and solvents meant for firearms. I had heard of people using it before but I wanted to know if it would be bad for the parts.

Thanks for the advice.

Use GunScrubber.
