The job classification is officially 7410 Automotive Service Worker and covers all City departments. The water department, Hetch-Hetchy, the parks and airport have different needs.
At the transit division the duties break down into four main areas:
1. Fuel and sweep the buses.
2. Start the buses in the morning for the commute, control the drivers when they come back from the commute and just want to dump a bus in the driveway.
3. Change oil, filters, light bulbs and lube the chassis during a preventative maintenance inspection.
4. Clean the shop and buses (work a floor scrubber, empty scrap metal, recycle and trash bins run the steam cleaner).
The transit hours stink, fueling is 6:30 in the evening until 2:30 in the morning. New guys usually have mid week nights off. Starting the buses in the morning begins at at 4AM in most yards. Working PMs is the only true dayshift with Saturday/Sunday off but there are only 10 positions in PM.
The pay is great, most of the positions have some premium pay added on. Employees co-pay the health, dental & retirement plans. Paid vacation, sick leave and most federal holidays. Depending on which City department tools may be provided. If you can work Oil Changers or Jiffy Lube, you can work here for a lot more money.
Here is how to apply!
Expect the mechanics announcement will be ready within two weeks.
