Can I weld 2 coil springs together?

Weld 'em up. Key is to get it VERY hot. Turn that welder up.

I know you're joking but we may as well explain to the poor guy this is exactly why you don't weld springs, the reason they're so strong and can flex repeatedly is they've been heat-treated, when you weld them you ruin that heat treating and the integrity of the metal is shot. Not to mention the possiblitity of the two ends flexing at different rates.. ech scary

Listen to that. they'll snap near the weld, where the heat treating is removed. You can find junkyard coil springs that will give you 3.5" and good flex by themselves.

That's what I love about this place, always good information.

Dude, welding is a bad idea, there's an easier way. Get at least 20 high pressure hose clamps. Put them around the parts of the two springs that touch each other and put as many clamps on there tight as you can. You now have one long spring.

You'll still need shocks though. Just take two regular style shocks and put a U-Bolt between the ends to hold them together.

Crash: Got those PiMp LED's installed yet?

I heard around a campfire recently that JB Weld will hold that.

That way you don't have to worry about the heat affected zone.

Then again doses of oat soda were flowing.

:laugh3:

Welding the two coils together is a bad idea, I think you've figured that out. No weld would ever be strong enough to put that much pressure on. It would be a death trap. You might be able to drive it for a little while, but think about the vibrations and impact that weld would be absorbing in the springs. Bad idea.

Didn't think it was late enough that you would all be so tired and grumpy. Should have waited till morning.

We always have someone on grump-watch, time of day has nothing to do with it... it is kinda like guard duty. HTH

I would pass on the welded springs. For 3.5" you can get a 2" spacer and f-150 springs. But your young and want to be an inovator, so here is an idea. I assume if you have access to a welder you have access to some torches. Go to a Construction site and find some Rebar and Steel pipe. Heat the rebar up, cherry red, and wrap it around the pipe. You can set the hight you want and if you use enough heat, it will add some "spring" to the metal. It could break eventually, but at least it wont break and "exit" the vehicle rapidly. oh, and then get a big "Monster Garage" sticker for the rear window, because that thing will be Hard Core. But that is just a early morning grumpy idea.

Can you weld 2 coil springs end to end?

yes you can...

It's like a fat chick in a thong...

just because you can doesn't make it right...
:yelclap:
"You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Gil BullyKatz again"

It's AM here and I'm wide awake and not grumpy....well not too grumpy.....this is just plain a bad idea......find another route to go....maybe welding there springs together......just kidding.....keep it semi-safe and enjoy our quirky little vehicles.

If you have access to a welder and you want to be innovative with somebody elses rig the only safe way to lift the front of an XJ for very little coin is to cut the bump stop off and weld in some large circle stock with a home made spring seat and then weld the bump stop to that. I would do it but its lost its novelty for several reasons.

1. Most people cant weld well enough not to burn holes in the fender which is also the seat of the existing spring set up.
2. Its been done before so theres no originality points to score
3. I like being able to wheel and not have to repair my junk which I have to do more than I like now.

P.s. the further you get from the fender the more lift you will have with the stock springs but the more leverage is put on the sheet metal welds on the fender. I wouldn't go more than say 3" in any case.

I have to give you some credit for 2 reasons though.

1.You had enough balls to start this thread knowing in the back of your mind that it probably was not a good idea and that you would take some shite for it.
2.That you had enough brains to at least ask before you did it or you would have ended up with a lawsuit of a picture of your stupidity floating around on the net to remind you and others what not to do.

Seriously though, thanx for asking but expect the shite for out of the ordinary questions or downright no thought or search button(it is your friend) questions. On the topic of originality or innovation: ITS ALL PROBABLY BEEN DONE BEFORE SINCE THE VEHICLE CAME OUT IN 84 AND ISN'T EVEN BEING PRODUCED ANYMORE, SO USE THE SEARCH BUTTON AND IF YOU DONT GET ANYTHING BACK THEN ITS PROBABLY NOT A GOOD IDEA!

Thanks for the laugh guys.

Crash, you win for most amount of laughter.

No worries guys. I won't do it. I am not an auto idiot, just not a welder.

Heck, one time I even built a Factory five Racing Cobra Replica.... drove and raced the piss out of it for about 5 years, then sold it for $31,000.

Moving on now......
