Camping this weekend. N. Georgia. (Close to Chattanooga!!)

It won't be long till I'll be ready. I think I got me a pop up camper to tag along and camp out of. As soon as my gears are in, count me in Stump!!!

I'm looking forward to being able to get out and do some riding. Are these trips camper friendly?

This particular place probably is ok. I havent been to any campspots my trailer couldnt go yet though, so it just depends on the 'camper'

You should come down this weekend. Bring a tent, that way you can explain/shows to the powers that be why it would be a good idea to get a small camper.

Classic. "well honey, if we had a camper, you wouldn't have this problem, nudge nudge."

Got the trailer. It's a '93 Coleman Pioneer. Woot Woot!!!

Now I just need some gears in the front axle...soon...very soon, I can feel it!!!

The pioneers are pretty cool. If you wanted to get fancy, we could re-do the axle, and get a little more ground clearance. It would go to this place pretty easily though. Hook that puppy and meet us tomorrow...

Redo the axle?? You got my attention.

I am using a 10" drop ball mount and I still have to lift the front of the tailer up to get it on the ball. More ground clearance would definitely help with the hooking up and riding level problem I have.

More info please sir.

Sorry to jack the thread like this.

It was just a generic suggestion. I asume this has the small little tires, tucked up under the body? I was thinking, order a new axle with the right width, make it a 3500lb axle with a jeep bolt pattern, and add some decent springs, mounts, and shackles to the frame. You could use CJ or YJ springs, since they will be much longer/softer than the normal trailer springs. Throw some shock on it, and let it ride. Run a 29-31" tire of your choice, and have a much stronger set-up.

If you get a chance, shoot a picture of the underside of it. I would like to see what kind of frame work it currently has. Also, how big of an opening there is for the wheel.

Edit:
Is this what you got?

I will start a thread this evening on it but yes, the one I have is the size down from this one looks like. I've done some research and flipping the axle to spring over is simple and easy to do. I think I may try this tonight. I'll post some pics as I go.

Yeah, you could flip it, and it might net you 3 inches or so. But, you still have those 12 inch tires on there turning a million RPMs at highway speeds... pretty hard on bearings. I guess if you arent planning on pulling this on a trail where lots of clearance is desired, it wont matter. If you just need to raise it a little, that'll be the ticket. We could also rebuild the tongue to raise it up a few inches too.

If I can flip the axle, from what I've read, I can fit a 13" wheel and tire under it. That will def help on the bearings plus give me some lift in the rear. After thinking about it, I have an electric jack at home that might have a longer throw on it to get the tongue high enough to mount without lifting. I'm really excited about this little trailer and what I will be able to do with it.

I don't plan on taking it on the trail, but camping in general will be alot of fun and not having to sleep in a tent will make for a more enjoyable trip for me. I still want to drive to the trails and now I'll be able to pull my cabin with me instead of renting one!

Im locked and loaded, about to head out in a few minutes. Everybody on NAXJA sucks (except for Mark, you have about a month or so to get your stuff together, then I expect to see you out in the woods...)for not wanting to go camp on such an awesome weekend. :D

I think this is at least the 3rd or 4th invite I have put out there, and not one person has showed interest... Dont know what you're missing. :P

Got Mark's rig ready to tow yesterday. We're in for camping next time.

I know exactly what I'm missing-- and yeah, you're right I suck. I just can't justify taking the extra two days to travel and return for a couple days in the woods:nosmile:

I'll get out that way someday, but it'll be for an extended visit with a long list of "meet and greets" along the way. Hope the weather treats y'all right.

I hear ya man, its nice to get out, but ya gotta do what ya gotta do. Weather was phenomenal. Ended up with a decent group, good group of kids and my two dogs had a GREAT time. My dogs havent been this tired in a while, I know of 4 kids who are probably going to sleep really well tonight!

Here are a few pics...

Awsome Stump!!!!!

I've got several items straightened out on the trailer. Still got to get a few more things ironed out then I'll be ready to roll. That spot looks off the beaten path, would my little camper have made it? I've got to figure something out with my battery. It has one deep cycle battery on the trailer but no way to charge it. I was thinking of getting a small generator for power. Thoughts on it?

It would likely have made it just fine, that spot is about 30 minutes from any civilization, but the roads arent too bad. It may have drug a corner or two on the way in, but nothing bad.

Your tailer should be wired up so that when you plug in the trailer lights and drive down the highway, it charges the system. That how mine is set-up.

When camping back in the deep woods like we often do, most folks frown upon generators, even the new quiet ones. To be honest, most folks that go off the beaten path use solar panels for keeping batteries topped off. For about half the cost of a good small honda generator, you can have a ~ 60 watt solar panel set-up, with the charge controller included. It depends on the load you are pulling as far as how much wattage you need, but for instance my trailer will be getting a 50 watt set-up. I have only one deep cycle in the trailer, but when its hooked to my jeep, it then has 2 deep cycles, doubling the capacity. If I choose to, I can flip a switch and have all 3 batteries powering the trailer. With this set-up, I am good for about 6 days not doing any charging. I wouldnt push it past 5 days like that though, since I still have to start the jeep eventually. With one battery on the trailer its been good for about 2 days. A lot of it depends on the outside temp, which effect how often the fridge cycles on and off. Thats the biggest power puller, since all of my lighting is led.

Do some searching/research for 12 volt solar chargers, they work really well when they are matched to what you need.
