What the hell... Summit doesn't carry a CA legal catalytic converter that'll work with a Jeep?

If it's not CA legal... does that mean that I won't be able to find a muffler shop that'll install it? Or it won't pass smog? Or what?

What's everybody else running?

Thanks,
Billy

CatCo cats run about 50 bucks and are Ca legal. I think they sell CatCo if im not mistaken. most shops will sell you a cat and install it for around 100 bucks atleast Marco Muffler does, i used to work there. The Penny saver usually has a bunch of coupons for cats installed every week. With shipping and the cost to install you might aswell go that route, it will be the same price either way pretty much.

Yeah, if the cat isn't CA leagal then the muffler shop cannot legitimately install it.

I run a factory cat, works great. :)

What year is your rig?

I got their magnaflow high flow cat for my 94 and I passed smog. I can't rember if it said it was CA legal or not

Nope what you are fighting is the new laws that came into effect January 1st. They have to have very specific labeling and exemption order numbers. Ill see what I can find. BRB

I SMOGed one yesterday and it passed although mine are '93s and pre OBDII.

I know I'm out of the area, but . . .
My '89 Cherokee failed smog and I'm applying for the $500- state $$ + my $100- to fix emissions. The cat. listed above would use up most of the $$!
Who's to know where a cat. came from, and when it was installed, if it's already on the vehicle?

Vatozone has a direct replacement magnaflow cat for under 100$

AFAIK the new law makes it so you can't even buy CARB approved cats to install yourself, you have to get them through a certified shop and have them install it, also the smog shop is supposed to check for the CARB # on the cat during the visual inspection, at least thats what I heard anyway :dunno:

pretty lame considering magnaflow 49 state cats are $100 and CARB certified cats are $300-$900, I becha a magnaflow 49 state would pass the CA sniffer too, just doesn't have the magical CARB #

I have 2 OBD 2 XJ's.
A while ago I spent the money on a Ca. OBD 2 compliant cat. $$$
waste.

I suggest you buy your favorite, cheapest, high flow 49 state cat.
Slip fit or weld on.

After all old cats still pass smog.

There is no way that they can prove that it was installed yesterday or 5 years ago.

Not a good idea.

After 96 the max allowable emission levels drop. A new non-OBD cat might pass smog right after it is installed, but odds are it won't pass the test 2 years later.

true, and are the smog monkeys even going to check? probably not at the shithole smog shop I go to

Smog monkey?

You are talking out your ass on this subject. Please keep your uninformed comments to yourself.

There is no carb ID# on many cats, even CA specific. The test itself will prove whether the cat is functioning correctly or not. No need to check anything other than the presence of the cat itself.

After looking around it seems that the main difference may be a 5 yr. / 50k mi. warranty for CA legal cats.
I just submitted the paperwork to CARB for financial help getting the '89 smogged. I pay the first $100-, they pay up to $500- more. CA cat. is $100+, Oxy. sensor is $50-, etc., no brainer to me.
