CA Dog bite laws and bad owners.......need to vent a bit.....

I still think you should bite the dog back so it can see that it hurts/isn't nice!

Edit: If you don't want hair in your mouth use a piece of plastic wrap.

i actually did this for 2 of my dogs when they were getting over the puppy stage. i knew they were just playing but they needed to know biting was not an option. so after i would get bit too hard during play, i would bite them back on the ear. a small quick yelp and no more hard biting during play. worked great.

Courious of what would of happened if you did shoot the dog when you pulled your gun? You have the ccw permit and it was on your front yard, would this of been within your rights? Or in ca would you be made the bad guy, lose your gun and have to go to court and be forced to go to anger management and therapy classes lol

seriously, beat the s#it out of the neighbor. who cares about a dog. dogs bite. they are in fact animals. not the dogs fault. they do not have reasoning skills. neighbors fault. he has reasoning skills. beat him. 2x. seriously. then state that you are not dangerous. you're just playful.

and for those of you who say violence never solves anything, you dont understand the dynamics of conflict resolution.

Same thing i said. You just worded it a little better.

I would have been arrested for discharging a firearm within city limits.

No charge against me for concealing or carrying a loaded firearm, or shooting a dog.

But........the amount of training I have, paid off. Know your target and the surroundings.

The question I have, was it a vicious attack or was it a playful bite? This breed is known to be gentle and normally very good around children. Could it be that he doesn't get enough play time and is a bit rambunctious when it comes to children?
Either way, it is the fault of the owner. He should always be in control and pay attention to his pet.
I wish we could get rid of all the worthless people that easy too.

Full bore vicious attack. All 3 times on a human, and one other time where it broke through screen door to,attack another dog.

I'll have an update tomorrow night. Final meeting with my nasty attorney tomorrow morning.

If you are motivated by proving your neighbor wrong, teaching him a lesson or receiving a windfall settlement figure, you are very likely to be disappointed in the litigation process.

Litigation might be necessary if you have unpayable medical bills or legitimate long term concerns regarding your child's injury or health. Don't let your emotions drive your litigation decisions. Remember Mr. Nasty, Esq. has to have some element of salesmanship in his approach.

If animal control does the right thing and your health insurance covers your child's injuries, this whole mess might self correct without the nieghbor conflict element. In the end, you may have an opportunity to take the high road

Taking the high road is all well and good the first time around, might be an accident or rough play on the animals part or maybe some missed signals given by the kid to the dog. The dog bites the same kid again with no provacation and has attacked another animal through a screen, time for the dog to go away.

I love dogs as much as the next person and think they are great additions to the family, BUT THEY"RE NOT A PERSON!!! I think Mako showed incredible restraint in this situation in not overreacting by shooting the animal or kicking the owners ass.

If it had been a man attacking his kid we wouldn't even be having this conversation. Mako would've shot him and we'd be applauding.

Just my .02

I agree the animal needs to go away.

I agree dogs are NOT people.

I think Mako demonstrated "proper" restraint. He definatley deserves credit for not escalating the situation, but I feel that should be the expectation and isn't necessarily "incredible."

Anyway - Not sure if this is proper forum for this discussion. My point was that litigation may be effective in recovering real damages, but is rarely effective in proving your point.

I'm going to applaud you for your self control.
I don't have kids and my 2 dogs are my boys and I treat them like my kids but even so if they ever showed any sort of instability towards a human I'd rectify the problem permanently.
I hope your son understands that not all dogs are bad and that he can enjoy a life with good dogs.
Now as for the neighbor, get a lawyer.

why not just run it over or hit it upside the head with a shovel when no one is looking?

i got chased down on my bike and bit quite a few times by a dog back home (VERY RURAL) by this neighbors dog when i was in my early teens. dude was a drunk prick and never did anything about it. there isnt an animal control and no leash or fence laws back there (think farm land). it met my car door when i turned 16. problem solved. Please done hate. i love animals. i have dogs, and a cat. LOVE animals. this thing was a mean POS though and attached me and any other kid that came near that corner of the street. it had it coming. FYI i grew up in a 3 street town, literally. its a little different up there.

I'm not sure how old your kid is but imagine if it got a hold of a toddler. If its attacked twice and nothing happened, it will attack again, and again, and again. The dog needs to be either chained up or not allowed around people/kids. end of story. Getting a lawyer adn suing will probably cause all sorts of issues with the neighbor i'm afraid to say. best of luck dude...glad to hear your son is ok and you're not in jail :)

you CAN (should) tell him that he can give the dog to a rescue shelter or the like. the dog may be able to be trained and can go to a better / responsible owner. maybe away from kids and other people. just saying.

this!

Sucks that it has to be put down :/

How's your kid doing?

ive been bitten by a st bernard, those dogs are pretty protective from what ive seen. i'm sure extra protective around their kids, and your kid might have been seen as a threat in the dog's eyes. It sucks the dog needs to be put down, maybe suggest what 2stix said, certain people can handle dogs like that, no problem. They screen the dogs at the humane society and if the dog is not good with children, they will not put it with a family with kids and will state that is not to be around children. I dont allow my dogs near children, it isn't that hard.
If it was a flat out agression thing, then i'd say put it down, but it sounds like more of a protective thing, which i think can be worked with, and the humane society will know the right course to take.
At least the suggestion might keep the bad blood to a minimum between you guys.
