C&D Canal

So I've been reading into it and it seems to be LEGAL to wheel at the C&D canal during daylight hours. I found this on their site: “Vehicles. Motorized vehicles are only permitted on established and maintained roads. All motorized vehicles must be licensed.”

So what everyone has been saying for years that it's illegal to wheel there have been incorrect? Or did this just change?

I had a boat on the Elk river in Elkton MD back in the late 80's and been to the roads along the canal. You can drive on the maintained roads that run along the canal but 4wd is not required. If you get caught on the smaller trails you'll be fined. It's cool to see the larger boats on the canal and follow the roads to see where they go if you wan't to check it out. John

I was just curious. I was back there last night taking pictures and enjoyed myself. We were in a 4WD Jeep Compass, but my Camaro could handle most of the stuff we saw :)

It's been the same for years... the maintained (graded) access roads are legal during daylight hours only, for all street-legal vehicles. Rule of thumb, if a 60 year old judge in his Mercedes can't drive on it, neither should you (paraphrased from a ranger). The rangers can and do ticket if you're caught off the maintained roads. The fines will vary, depending on where you are and how muddy you are. And the rangers are usually in unmarked SUVs.

Whenever the enduro comes around it's not a good time to hang out there. The race isn't till April but the ranger's would love to catch one of us enduro riders running the course early. I went to train my lab down there this weekend and they gave me shit because I crossed a muddy path in the dog training area.
