Busted Wheel Stud - Need Help

As if I'm not dealing with enough little issues from my lift install, I added to the list by shearing off a wheel stud a few days ago. I've picked up a replacement stud and nut, but I can't even get the busted stud out. So far all I've tried is banging on it with a BFH (shaft still in the axle) to no avail. That's really all I can do - I don't have the tools to press it out.

Any suggestions for dealing with this? I can pull the shaft and take it somehwere if somebody has the tools to help me press the busted stud out and press the new one in. Otherwise I figure I can just swap the shaft and be done with it. Is there anybody out there with a 29 spline 8.25 shaft laying around that they can sell? (hint, hint Yella) I'm leaving for Silverton first thing Sunday morning, so I've gotta come up with a resolution tomorrow or Saturday.

Yeah, I have a couple shafts. Bring it by Friday afternoon or Saturday and we'll exchange. Or, you can buy one and keep the bad stud one as a trail spare - 8.25 shafts are the same length so they can be used right or left. Or, I have a torch set and we can burn it into submission..... :D

use a punch and a bfg an knock it out, than use a lug to pull the new 1 thru.

That's what I've been trying. I don't have a punch so I've been using an old screwdriver. I can't get it to budge...

hit it harder! :D

Ya! maybe Trailrunner has it right, use a 7mm magnum or something, 45-70 maybe? ........ :jester:

....seriously though, this is the rear axle right? Never heard of a stud being that stubborn, specially with a BFH?

.....be lazy and meet up with Yella.....

I'll give it another round of pounding with the BFH tonight and if that still doesn't do the trick, I'll meet up with Yella. I need to change the rear diff fluid anyway...

I managed to bust two studs (all five lugs were loose, and I didn't notice till I got up to speed - I think someone must have loosened them, as I'm pretty anal about tightening lugs). I had to put a little heat to them (with a mapp/propane torch) and they pounded out pretty easily.

Don't got to Troy's...you'll see too many other cool things you'll want.

Jawa's rig came from Michigan or somewhere out thataway. He's been fighting rust gremlins like crazy. It doesn't surprise me that the lug studs could be good and rusted in place.

I don't know how our Chapter brothers out east deal with modding their rigs with all that rust. That's some special dedication........ :looney:

Well, more whacks with a BFH didn't do the trick, so I swung by Yella's last night and picked up a new shaft. I swapped it in today and all is good. Chalk up another one for good ol' midwest rust...

Woo hoo! .....now its Yella's problem :)

Since you have all these midwest rust problems, go to a auto paint supply shop and buy"One Step" awesome rust converter! On the frame and any rusty parts. Looks like pepto bismo but after two coats turns into a hard black primer and nearly indestructible and will never rust again!

....also did you make sure you use some Permatex anti seize? All my bolts specially the ones on the suspension makes it easier for future removal and you won't have to fight the rust again.
