Broke axle stuck in my locker.

Busted a 27 spline 8.25 shaft with my 4.56's, powertrax, lowrange, and 35" tires. Imagine that. Anyway, these axles have to get me to this winter. I got a entire assembly from Woody for a great price so no upgrading for now( I've already got a 14 bolt).

Pulled the drivers side shaft and it broke about 1.5"s from the bearing. The passenger came out with our a hitch. C-clip came right out. But the passenger side shaft, whats left of it, will only move towards the center of the carrier about 1/8". Not enough to get the c=clip to drop out. As I understand it that is the proper way to do this. I pulled the carrier and tried to couerse the remaing shaft in with a bfh. Not to hard, but it wouldn't move.

Please dont tell me i have a screwed locker. I didnt drive over 50' with it busted.

Ideas?

trying to picture it. you got the passenger side out but there is still about 4-5" of the driver side shaft still in?

and you can't get the driverside shaft to go in far enough to drop the c-clip?

ok, pull the passenger side shaft. the c-clip should have dropped from the slot.
now start pulling the no-slip appart. first teh springs on the sides then the passenger side inner gear.
then pull the driver side inner gear. that should give you enough room to push the broken stub of driverside shaft in to get the clip to drop.
then get a long bar and feed it in through the passenger side tube. take a BFH to it and drive the broken shaft out.
if you can get a digital photo of it. then send it too me at [email protected] and I can get a better visual.
hope this helps.

You have the carrier out of the housing?

What happen is the shaft twisted prior to breaking and so the splines aren't inline any more.

See if yo can dremel the c-clip out or hit the shaft harder until something gives, maybe you'll get lucky and it will be the shaft.

good luck

Mark got it. I got the carrier out. I cant see a way to dremal the c-clip. It doesnt seem reachable. Im thinkin the splines are twisted too. Should I just hit it harder? This isnt really somthign I wanna torch out. I guess if all else fails I could cut the carrier in half. I dont think that heating the drivers side gear would be a good idea either.

Did you pull the powertrax appart? I think once you get it seperated you should be able to beat the c clip out. Why would you cut the carier?

Hmmm, I thought the powertrax was like the lock right? My rear 35 lock right comes out in two pieces. It isn't easy but it will come out. Last time I did it it destroyed the compresion springs though and took a couple of hours. You try to beat the clip out with a screwdriver? Let me guess it turned or did not budge! I'd beat it harder but that is me! Another reason to not like c-clip axles!

Maybe its different. But from what I can tell, you cant touch the c-clip till the axle is slid in. I guess I'll just hit it harder. And I think Im gonna give powertrax a call. Well see.

The clip is recessed into the locker I would assume? With just a slot for it to come out?

with a power trax. you have to take it a part in sequence and can only get to the driverside shaft till the passenger side shaft is out and the two center halves of the locker are out. then the c-clip should be right there.

email me at [email protected] and i will send you a pic.

i agree, it sounds like csud hasn't dissasembled the locker yet...
go to the poertrax site and read their directions, and reverse them...
the axle won't slide in, to allow the c-clip to fall out until the locker is 90% dissasembled.
the c-clip is installed in like the first couple of steps, during the install; so that would mean it is on of the last items to come out, and even if the axle is twisted, the locker should still come apart no prob.
two springs are all that holds the unit together...
