broke a steering u-joint

Well, I went and did it!

I broke my rig! (Not that I was intending to though...)

I took the trail up toward Loche Lammond off the Fall River trail. (it's 7012 or 701.2, I don't remember it there was a period on the markers or not.) On the way down, I remembered seeing on the map that there was a loop from the main trail back to itself. I was on the upper end and decided to go for it. I don't know exactly when, but I broke my RH u-joint on my Dana 30.

You can see the broken u-joint in the open knuckle.

I was sitting there, on top of the small steep hill with two big boulders sticking up in my way and a precarious bowl to my left when I realized the front end made a nasty noise. I inspected it an found the u-joint was trashed.

I tried to stay in 2wd but found a gnarly rockbed after clearing the hill. I couldn't make it all the way in 2 wheel, I had to go to four and accept the consequences. The above picture was after I cleared the rockbed and joined back up to the main trail.

I decided my only choice was to remove the axle shaft and drive without it. My wife encouraged me to buy some nitrile gloves from Harbor Freight last week and I found them very usefull. I also picked up a 4lb. sledge hammer for $2.99. I didn't know what I'd be needing it for! But, I was sure glad I had it!

Well, it was two hours of beating and second guessing before I made enough progress on getting the wheel bearing assembly removed from the knuckle to know I had it made.

You can see the carnage that was inflicted on the shaft.

So, where should I go to find the replacement parts? local junk yard or is there a recommended jeep parts outfit around the Denver area?

DJ.. what the heck are you talking about? for that kind of wheeling there's no way he needs to drop that much cash.

RCH: pick up a new (used) from the yard along with the hubs. Next time, pull the three bolts that hold the entire hub/shaft assembly, swap in the new (used) ones and be back on the road in 15 mins. piece of cake... just remember to replace your spare's with new spares.

Of course he doesn't need to.

Make sure you get a 297/760 replacement. Looks like you have an 87, I imagine thats a stock 260. The 297 shafts out of a newer Jeep will fix you right up, and be a little better for the wear...............

That sounds like a good plan. How can I tell the difference between them? Will I have to change the differential as well or is the spline setup identical?

Yes, I will be picking up some as spares. I had a spare u-joint, but it was too trashed to replace it.

Thanks for the advice.

They are Yukon Super Joints, 4340 cross section and 4140 caps. They have a lifetime warranty against breakage of the cross section. They run about $260 a pair. Here is a little bit of info about them.

All 95+ have the 297 U-Joints, and the shafts that accept them. They just slide right in to replace the weaker 260 jointed shafts.

Have been looking at getting an extra set of shafts to slide in, in an event like this. Do all the Cherokee axle shafts except the 297 U joint or should I be looking for 95+ shafts as 91 Jeep Project states above?
