Ok Im redoing the rear drums in my 94 XJ. Got the drive side down with easy, but now I get the passenger side all done, go to put on the drum and it wont go one with out persuation from a rubber mallet. Once its on the wheel will only spin backwards and not forwards. So I took it back off and everything looks right and the adjustment screw is as small as it will go. Is there any other adjustment I dont know of?????

Well after eating and then taking another look. I found that the brakes are shifted to the right. I dont know why or how. The drum slides on and off ok right untill it gets to the lugs. And then none of the lugs line up correctly.

Whats the big hurry? You chasing snatch tonight? As the other guy said it sounds like the parking brake. Did the cable get pulled and its holding everything out a little? Does the cable hang up. Try giving the park cable a little more slack at the park brake adjuster connection. The shoes should be seated against the radius's at the top and against the star adjuster. The cylinders pins should be in the shoe/groove and sort of floating. The park brake mecanism shouldnt be influencing the brake parts at all with it sitting there. Look at the other side again to see whats different. Slow down and relax. Sometimes you have to step away for a few minutes and come back and you may see the problem. One last way to trouble shoot the p b cable is to remove it and see if everything is ok. Then go back and find the problem AND RECONNECT THE CABLE. I know you where thinking gee I can leave it off. Dont do that.

The shoes swivel in the middle, are held static by the adjuster (a folcrum of sorts) and are pushed out by the wheel cylinder.
You can often push both shoes together and collapse the wheel cylinder a little. Giving you some more room. Double check your springs, make sure something isn't in the wrong hole.
After reassembling everything, don't count on the first stop (first time you try the brakes) to do much. Crap no brakes... It often takes a few cycles of operation and maybe some adjustment to get it right. And/or new brake shoes and pads, often have a shiny coating that actually doesn't work very well for stopping. But usually gets worn off in short order. I lightly sand mine before installation.
There is really no reason not to file some of the outside ridge off the drums, with a half round file. A little less material in this area, can make getting the drims on much easier. And a little filing after each show replacement, helps avoid the ridge getting so high you can't get the drums off again in the future, without major sweat.
When the drum doesn't align with the studs, slap the side of the drum with your palm, it will usually shift, without too much force.

Well it turned out it was the Ebrake. At the drum its to tight for the brakes to sit right, but then at the adjuster its super lose? Dont know whats wrong but for now Im going to leave that side unattached

Oh and I am supposed to go and pick up an axle and go for a ride tomorrow thats why I want to get it fixed today

X2 what 8Mud said.

When I replace the rear brake shoes, I usually open the bleeder valve on the wheel cylinder and push the shoes in to make sure the cylinder is *fully* compressed. Remember: The adjustment screw only moves the bottom of the shoes. The hydraulics move the top. You need to get them both inward to make room for the drum over the new (thicker) brake shoes.

Check to see if the brake cable sheath got pulled out of the backing plate and hung up on the ferrule, or the ferrule got pulled out of the hole in the plate. If the sheath or ferrule gets out of place it will pull the cable too tight.

If you don't connect that cable, the handbrake on the other side probably won't work either, because the equalizer will just flop sideways. So if you expect to need the e-brake, it's worth a second look to see if you can figure out what is wrong.
