Well it happened! On the way home from work today, was cruising up I 380 and my Jeep started to shake. Started losing power and realized that something was going on. The thing still ran and I had oil pressure so I continued on. When I got closer to home I pulled over and checked it out. Leaking alot of oil and smoking, but it still ran, albiet on five cylinders. started tearing into motor, but with temps at zero said the heck with it and headed home. Don't know the damage yet, but it looks like it burned up a valve and maybe took out a piston. Wondering if anyone knew where to get a factory rebuild besides Pep Boys. Tried there with my '84 Xj and it was a piece of crap motor. Thanks in advance, Bob

The "name" that seems to keep coming up in mass-produced rebuilt engines is Jasper, and they have dealer/installers in most parts of the country. Whoever you buy it from, if you get a rebuilt expect to pay between $1800 and $2500 for it, with a 1-year to 3-year warranty.

In contrast, if you shop the yards you should be able to find a fairly late-model engine out of a wreck for about $600. The difference in cost would pay for the labor of having it installed.

Eagle, Glad to see you are back. Hope you and the wife are doing good. I got a price of $1680 for a Jasper motor, and that is with shipping. Not too bad a price. I was going to buy a used one, but with my luck the darn thing would blow up after a week or so. I just don't want to go through this again for a couple years! After work tomorrow My brother and I are going to pull the motor and then tear it down to find cause. Still hashing around a couple of options, most likely going to go the Jasper route though. Thanks for the info, catch you on the trails, Bob

Bob,

Shipping on the above linked engine is around 175. your still under the Jasper price. the warrenty is better. 7yrs/70k miles. and you can have anyone install it as long as the warrenty papers are filled out. The Jasper dealer in PA that is near me told me that they require the engine to be installed by one of their installers/dealers. Something to look into. I now have about 18k on my engine. Runs like a charm. Just a thought, Juice

edit, I see your in PA, don't know how close to the MD line you are but you can have the engine shipped to the truck station and just pick it up and save some bucks. I picked it up on Winchester, VA. They gave me a credit of 50 bucks back for that. Saves the driver and my back from getting it out of a semi truck in the driveway.

Thanks Juice, I will give them a second look. If I can save a few bucks that would be great! Bob

what part do you need to know about. 7/70,000 is a great warranty. Comes with brass freeze plugs, really nice touch. Juice

ok I read it over a couple times......I was thinkin the labor part was saying that it covered the install of the new engine...which did sound good, but also weird...then I read it again and realized it sayed that it covered the cost of labor if it were to brake down or something.......sorry I'm not thinking straight today...alittle stressed out since my engine seemed to have seized today
