Block heater

Hopefully someone can help me a little here. I have a 90 laredo that has a block heater. I am unsure at this point if it works,( wire is in good condition) even though I have plugged it in before. I believe it is for the oil pan if I remember its location correctly. Were these stock ever? I am thinking it was installed aftermarket. Also is there any way of testing to see if it even works? Thanks in advance.

I have a block heater on my 99 up country. Don't know if it was an option or after market. To test your block heater, feel the block to see how warm it is, plug it in, come back in an hour and see if the block is warmer than when you started. :gee:

I have one on my 98 classic up country. Never used it, strange considering I'm in Houston. It is in the first freeze plug on the side of the block. It heats the engine coolant.

If you find out anything please share.

I had a factory installed block heater on my '99.. The bracket holding it in the freeze plug hole broke off and overheated the engine. Long story short, I built a stroker, drove it for a while and sold it (to XJ-Grin).

Just make sure those heaters don't fall out. Dealer had over-tightened mine ( cause it was leaking) which I beleave triggered the failure...

Unless you REALLY need it I would avoid them.

Adam beat me to the story! Good excuse to build a stroker though!
