Bilstein 5100 quick question.

the 5160 doesnt come with a schraeder valve... so you cant recharge them without drilling and tapping a schraeder valve.... but they make rebuild parts... thats what i mean by semi rebuildable.

Keep in mind that the 5160 is application specific and already tuned for the vehicle it is intended for. As with the application specific 5100's very few 5160 customers will need to revalve/rebuild these shocks.

Regarding having to tap threads this is incorrect, the 7100 reservoir end cap is used for the conversion and it is already threaded for a schrader. There is no need to tap threads. The valving nut is peened from the factory though so they need a bit of cleanup before the switch to the 7100 nylock nut.

Damn it Joel, I just got off the phone with Shane and was gonna post up the info but you beat me to it.

the rebuild kit is a new rod guide and end cap with schrader valve already tapped. So the rebuild kit makes the 5160 a 7100 sort of. the rod's are different but all the parts from a 7100 rebuild work on a 5160. I'm very happy with my 5160's so far. The little rubber o-ring travel marker is cracked and about to break off but I kinda expected that.

Maybe a little off topic, but...

Can you or has anybody run the 5160s spec'ed for TJs with 5-6" of lift in an XJ with 5-6" of lift? I have looked all over for this answer for quite some time now and I have found no real world experience on the internets. I don't see why not, as some other Bilstein shocks cross over between these 2 Jeep models. For example:

The 5100 series uses the exact same shock (PN 24-185943) in the front for TJs and XJs with 5-6" lift, yet Bilstein only lists the 5160 (PN 25-187809) for TJs with 5-6" lift.

The 5100 shock has a collapsed length of 16.97" and 28.44" extended.
The 5160 shock has a collapsed length of 16.44" and 28.39" extended.

Is there a reason the 5160s are not spec'ed by Bilstein for XJs? The collapsed length is shorter, therefore this would not cause a fitment issue.

Any of you guys have any insight on this?

Not sure why Bilstein doesn't spec it, might be a valving thing.

So if the specs work within your bumpstops and limit straps then go ahead and run it.

are the 5150's a bad set of shocks? i just ordered a set of 4 for my xj, i put on a 2" lift so i ordered the 8.5" shock, with the BPE and adaptor up top i'll have the same compressed length as stock. but i'll still have 2" longer droop. im not looking to go baja with my xj or anything crazy. but i was pretty unhappy with my pro comp hydro shocks i had before these. i heard cuz of the piggy back rezzy it's suppose to help with foaming and shock fade, but my friend just told me differently today. bottom line i just want my shocks to hold up for a while and not disappoint.

I run 5150's in the rear. I have been very pleased with them at both higher speeds in the arroyo's and washes, as well as rock crawling. Not a bit of fading, even when I was pushing my XJ harder than I ever have while pre-running a race course. Great shock for the money, IMHO.

Since the 5160 is application specific it is likely that the test fit/ valving verification for one chassis is complete and the other is still pending. Bilstein dosent cut corners on application specific fitments.
