Best modification??

Recovery ( can't go wheeling again if you can't get it out the first time)
Lift
Gears
Lockers
tires
Skid Plates
bumpers
Winch
rear disc

Best cheapest mod putting a 30" X 40" hole in the roof to get some air in. ;)

Gutting the inside of almost all trim, headliner, carpet, et cetera and pulling out all the drain plugs. I still have everything power and heated leather seats, but now I don't worry about getting mud and crap everywhere. If my kids or I make a mess--hose it out. Done and done.

got any pictures..wink, wink...nudge nudge....eh? been wanting to do this! tell all about it. Please

Came from Pace Edwards originally. I think someone picked up the line (JC Whitney?). Made of some fuzz-covered aluminum. Has two lighter plugs up inside.

And I lied. My best mod was the TeraLow in the 242.

Im gonna take this the other way, and go by which mods 'feel the best',....
1-h4 hid headlights
2-hood w/ pins and strut
3-disc braked, locked and over geared d44
4-general engine bay modifications, alternator relocated, random parts cleaned up and painted.

I just installed my new tailbone yesterday so its my favorive right now ;)

But other than that I gotta go with my RE lift kit and my KM2s. I mean come on, how far would i get with 28" streeet tires :smsoap:

if you are stock the best mod hands down is aggresive tires.
hack the fenders wich is free so doesnt count disco the sway bar and the differance is amazing. honestly who puts in a locker then shows up on the trail with a set of street tires.
your lockers arent going to do shit when you get a flat or cut a sidewall not to mention the shit youll get from your buddies who now halve to wait for your dumbass to change a tire not to mention that your dumbass probably doesnt have a spare, hell id be suprised if such a person could change a tire.
get some tires

To many to list..

Crown Vic rear discs maybe the best ..

guess that depends where you wheel, or maybe what you wheel.

I have been wheeling AT's for about 3 years now. Unlocked they performed quite well, locked they are just great. Heck I got stuck in wet grass when the lawn flooded one spring, 4 wheels touching, but none grabbing. Then a year later I drove through 2' of mud, same AT's, but locked F/R.

My best mod so far was getting a daily driver. The money I save on gas pay for the newer car, and then some. I don't have to rush mods over the weekend to get the XJ back on the road for Monday. Not to mention I can buy and mod knowing it won't have to do high speeds/miles, so no sway bar, softer tires, shocks meant more for offroad and a body thats hacked up, cage, etc.

1. aggressive mud tires. who needs a lift when you can chop! ;)

auxillary lighting on the front bumper is good too. has helped me spot pesky deer many a time as well as made life easier when escaping from the dark woods after a recovery which took longer than expected

If your going off of his recomendations you should not buy BFG M/Ts :D.

I still think lockers trump tire size and tread pattern.

This is a very difficult question.

To have taller Tires, One must have a Lift Kit. Whether Short Arms and a Shortened Front Driveshaft (due to Driveshaft Compression), Short Arms with Drop Brackets, or a Long Arm Kit... One is needed if going to 32" Tires or Larger. It would all depend on Rear End Vibration if one must install a SYE or not. IMHO

What is the most Important Modification... It is the Lift Kit.

ok by far the best mod for a xj is going doorless. it's free and extreamly easy. when your going down the road at 55 mph, commando and you get this nice breeze up your leg ^.^ nothing in the world can beat that lol

Lift
Tires
Posi-Lok
Aussie up front
ZJ HD fan clutch

I Don't know about best but the first should be recovery points. Unless you like digging a trench under your XJ after you go belly deep in mud to find a place for your new recovery strap. Remember that new tall boy jack is very unstable in deep mud so get the points.
A good reciver in back works great as a point as well as being able to tow if needed. Besides the many other thing you can do with it.
Front: On the mild end is hooks and brackets that can be had for under 200 bucks. On the wild side are massive bumpers and winches. A little bit over 200 bucks :) . But many will also brace up the steering box as well. Also include the cost of new front springs/shocks often needed to carry that monster bumper around.

my best is also my worst..... LIFT once I lifted my to do list quadrupled and my wallet got smaller ha but the FUN got alot better :looney:

I cant believe that only two people listed armor and skids. Just as many as listed cup holders.

Skids Skids Skids and more Skids. No matter how big your tires, no matter how big your lift you will always need and be happy you added skids.

In order of priority

Transfer case
Gas Tank (and rear hitch)
Rock rails
diff. guards
(Now you can start to lift it and leave the 1, 1+ or green trails behind)
Eng-trans skid. I love my Rustys eng-trans skid, (no welds on them)
