I replaced the belt on my 94 yesterday and today i'm TRYING to do my g/f's 98, and there is a little difference w/ the tensioner. Where is it? I cant find any elongated holes like on my 94 to loosen the belt. Also, i have the haynes manual from auto zone that showed me the routing of the belt on my 94, on my g/f's its completely different. Thats no problem i was just curious why they changed it and if any of you guys know how to loosen the 98 let me know. Thanks!

It's been a while since I did mine ('98), so IIRC you loosen up the alternator. There's a bolt towards the top/rear of the alternator.

:twak: Alternator? It's int the power steering area :D There is a long bolt behind a power steering pump (or in the area of) that moves the idler pulley. But, before you start on that long bolt you have to loosen up the idler pulley a hair so that it loosens up the tension on the long bolt.

Ohhhhhh... i got it now....thanks guys....that is one hell of a tight bolt to break loose though.

On my 2000 you loosen the center bolt on the idler pulley below the power steering pump. Then loosen the tensioner bolt on the drivers side between the valve cover and the power steering pump.

Yup

Yeah thats how the tension adjustment on the idler pulley works on mine. Its below the P/S pump. Theyre what 15mm bolts I believe. I always carry them (sockets) around.
Both are 15mm

Thats what I thought bowzer I couldn't remember exactly. The gear wrench I have (15mm) works really well for the pully bolt b/c its box end is straight not angled and its long, besides racheting. I keep that and some other common size tools in the jeep and take an already packed box of misc spare parts (like the belt) plus a more comprehensive toolbox whenever I stray far from civilization.

UGH!! Alright, yesterday you guys helped me out finding the pulley to loosen tension, i changed hers and the one on my 94, both same kind of belt, 20 bux autozone duralast or something...anyways, when we both start up the jeeps for the first second right after it catches an ear piercing screetch comes from the belts and then goes away immediatly. I'm thinking belts are too tight/loose? Or are they just bad belts? Let me know what you guys think. Thanks

Go to Napa and get the Krikit, a belt tension gauge. Costs about $12, is small, works great. Your belts are now considered used, so tighten them to the used spec (not sure what that is? 160 maybe?)

Not to belabor the obvious, but did you tighten the idler pulley back up after you tensioned the belt? My jeep recently was doing the squeal just for a sec on startup for a week and my idler pulley was backing out of the bracket.

I just changed the water pump et al and yes the belt is too loose. I don't have the luxury of getting a Krikit right now but I tensioned it up until the belt could barely get to 90 (water pump to ps) until I get down to Seattle and get the Krikit.BTW I had to use PB Blaster to get the tension bolt going it was pretty gummed up and tight.

Good idea to anti-seize the thing when reassembling....
