Hmmm.....so the 9+ million acres of Southern Utah that SUWA and the Sierra Club are lobbing to have closed to all mechanical forms of transportation now falls into the urban sprawl catagory? Then why are they attempting to have it catagorized as wilderness?

The town of Moab was being rapidly vacated in the mid-1980s due to the closure of Altas, a uranium processing facility.
The town is now about 85% dependant on the tourism industry, a rebound that has been amazing to watch over the last 15 years. There are thousands of miles of roads and trails that were created by mining and ranching, these include many of the trails and roads that we will be running our NAXJA event on in October. There are 10x1000's of bikers, hikers, ATV and 4x4 enthusuists that use these roads and trails on a regular basis, some of us several times a year. And we spend money in Moab, which in turn supports their economy.

But here's the twist........SUWA and the Sierra Club want this area to be be called Wilderness, and the trails closed and access denied to everyone except hikers. Where does this leave those of us that repect and enjoy this land on a regular basis, via wheeled transportation? How about the residents and business owners of Moab? Why is it that someone that never uses this land, has never seen this land, nor will ever visit this land, have a say on how it is used.

Before you contribute money and join a cause.......know everything you're supporting.

Give this a whirl..........God created wilderness, a world for the use of man........then he made man. Man created industry and recreation..........the Sierra Club wants to create wilderness out of the land that God created for industry and recreation.........no wonder you're confused.

Don't believe me, read about it yourself.....

It sounds like the handicapped people are being discriminated against here. The granola eater tree huggers only want the land for their Charles Manson cult camps.

does this mean we can expect a gathering of hippies at Moab in october too? its good to believe in something and be active.. but arent these the same people who dont have jobs cause they are out marching for peace and forgetting to shower? there for they drive old beat up volvos and vw's that couldnt pass emissions if they had to? seems like a double standard to me.. at least thats how my Vermont hippie sisters see life.....
damn i hate party poopers....

There are a fair amount of the hippie type that take their monthly bath in the City Market bathroom sink and graze off the salad bar (I've witnessed both ) but the ones that I really feel threatened by are the folks that have plenty of money, with middle to upper class incomes that donate generously to any cause that gives them a tax break and makes them feel like they are helping to save something. These are the folk that keep the SUWA and Sierra Club attorneys collecting a huge salary and keep them focused on grabbing more public land, closing more trails, inventing millions of acres of wildeness that hasn't been such for 100 years, closing millions of acres of forest to logging and recreation, halting coal, oil and gas exploration, hiding behind the desert tortise, spotted owl, lynx, ...........I'll stop here because the list just keeps going........

For once I'd like to see them out improving trails, cleaning up trash and actually doing something besides writing a check. Especially since a huge percentage of contributors will never even attempt to visit the land that they think they are paying the attorneys to protect. This degree of seperation insulates them from the reality that they are taking away rights, privledges and liberties from the average joe who merely wants to enjoy this beautiful land with his family and friends. I have friends that are handicapped and are avid Jeepers and ORV enthusiests, if the trails are closed, where does that leave them? The Greenies have nothing to loose, if the land is closed to vehicles, they can still hike it. As ORV users, we have everything to loose.

We get a bad rap as 4x4 enthusiest for a minute few that choose to not tread lightly, blaze new trails without regard to the environment and dump trash at every pit stop along the way. This kind of behavior makes me more angry than it could any enviro-activist because it fuels thier cause. Stand up for your rights to use this public land, everyone should have access to it and repect it.

If I've offended someone here regarding this matter......let me suggest the cultivation of some thicker skin.

Related rant.
The Sierra club is also backing this rich salt lake doctor who had nothing better to do with his nice income than start the Glen Canyon Institute to raise money to lobby to have Lake Powell drained and have Glen Canyon "restored and returned to it's past". One if this bright guys reasons is that it should be drained because it is so low right now. Nevermind that we are in a 4 year drought and that dams are built to store water (wich tends to be what is lacking during a drought). These people are moronic to the highest degree and need to be kept in check as much as possible, If not then plan on hiking the slickrock bike trail, backpacking to Gemini Bridges, and paying extra taxes for more coal burning "dirty" power plants, and to subsidise the income or relocation of the residence of Moab and Page Arizona. In other words plan on these towns dying and never visiting these locations for your favorite recreational activity again if these idiots have thier way.

Because of my love for hiking I thought I was very interested when I heard about the sierra club back in 1992. It only took me an hour of research to realize they did absolutely nothing of benefit to the majority of outdoor enthusiests.

Its seem to me like groups like the sierra club spend all thier time trying to close of land to people, rather than work with people to find a better way to manage and maintain land for all to use. That sounds like it would be a much better idea to me, its what just about every offroad club that I know of works to do, too bad it just can't seem to catch on with these big budget groups that want to close off everything to everyone but themselves. Groups like the Sierra club also kind of contradict themselves, they recieve huge donations each year but not from penniless unemployed hippies but but wealthy individuals, who more than likely didnt get rich selling hemp necklaces, but probably are the SUV driving beverly hills type of people who work for major corporations that do a fare share of polluting the environment, not to mention that, I might be mistaken but was once told thatt the seirra club also gets a a kick back of $ from stores like EMS which around here are usually only found in large shopping malls, which is something else, I don't belive that the Sierra club is for. They have no morals and strive to take away our land and are willing to take money from anyone willing to donate regardless of who or where it came from. But hey thats just my take on it all.
