I have an 88 XJ auto and 4wd. When my problems started (start then no start) my problem was the crank sensor, confirmed this with a DVM. Then it started having the same symtoms....turned out to be the ignition control module. It finally gave up and quit working all together which made it an easy find. Same problem as the crank sensor (start no start) just the difference was where it was loosing the power or no signal. (hope that makes sense).
You will need to jump thru the loops in diagnosing your problems thru the process of elimination.
Test before you replace. Don't ASS U ME that a new part is good. For instance, what if your CKP is the real problem and you put a (new) bad coil into the mix too?
