Azusa Canyon OHV area construction

I saw some major work going on in the Azusa Canyon OHV area yesterday; according to one of the guys on the site, they're building a haul road to excavate part of the reservoir bed. However, this has meant the closure of part of the South end of the OHV area at certain times.

I don't know if this is already a known issue, but I did run across this flyer detailing a bit more about what's going on. For what it's worth, the guy on the site seemed to indicate that this would be a five-year-long process and that they may have to permanently close part of the south end of the OHV area while it was underway.

To give some idea of how much work has already been done, a dirt ramp leading up from the canyon floor to about the entrance of Burro Canyon Shooting Park has been constructed and heavy machinery is already using it; this wasn't there the last time I was there about month or so ago.

Certainly, it looked as though about 30% of the south end of the area has been closed off and is in more-or-less constant use by the construction equipment. I don't know if people still want to meet there on the 7th, but without access to the edge of the reservoir there's not going to be a lot in the way of mud to fool around in.

BOOO!!! I don't like that.

I'm not real keen on it either, but check the PDF - if I've read it correctly, we get the use of most of the construction area at weekends, which means that there's actually a small part of the canyon open to us that wasn't before.

I have never been to Azuza so I don't know how much we will have to play around in. You say only 30% has been blocked off, then we should have room to play.

There's definitely space to play around in - but it's mostly rocks beds / sand / rocky sand. The rivers still have water in them, but with the recent heat they're a tad on the low side. It's still fun for an afternoon, though. The whole area's only maybe 150-200 acres, so no real big exploring opportunities unfortunately. Burro Canyon Shooting Park's about 4 miles away if anyone's interested, though.
