Does any one know of a 4x4 shop that carries steel axel shims in Denver? High Country 4x4 are out and the 4wheelparts store on Federal only carry aluminum and are out of them for jeep. Would like to get them Sat. if possible. I'll try the 4wheel parts off of 70 Sat. but i'm betting they don't carry steel.

Good luck - let me know if you find some though. I have some 4* Al ones waiting to go in right now but haven't opened the package; may return them if you find steel, especially since I need to re-measure and think 6* is more correct.

I've got steel 4* in my 98xj W/RE3.5, hack & tap, high angle drive shaft and it needs more. I'm thinking 6* too. High Country said they could get steel in 2-3 days but I was wanting to do it this weekend.

so how do you determine how much shimming is needed?

i've been running the RE 4.5" kit w/ SYE and tcase drop for a while now w/ no problems; last month when i swapped in a HP30 i thought i'd try to remove the tcase drop, but that resulted in massive vibes even at parking lot speeds, so i reinstalled the tcase drop. i'm not currently running shims (D44), but i'd like to remove the tcase drop again so would the shims likely solve this problem?

Sounds like you need to shim something. Remove the t-case drop and do some measuring. Since you have an SYE, you want the rear pinion to point at (or slightly below) the t-case output. I measured mine with the driveshaft out, and held a yardstick at the middle of the flange, pointed just slightly above the center of the pinion yoke. Use an angle finder on that, and an angle finder measurement on the face of the pinion to determine how many degrees you need to point the pinion up at the t-case.

You don't have one, but measuring a non-SYE drveshaft would be similar, although you would measure the pinion yoke angle and the driveshaft/t-case output angle and determine the amount of shim needed to make those parallel.

Also make sure your vibes aren't coming from the front shaft after removing the t-case drop; take the front shaft out. Did you replace the front driveshaft along with the HP D30 swap? Otherwise the old driveshaft may be too long for you...

You still need shims?? I got a set of 6* RE steelies in GJ.

mtnranger might - I remeasured last night and it looks like the 4* are what I need; 6* look like they'll point the pinion too high. Thanks,

Jim

I picked up some 6*at 4wheelparts today, will let you know on the fit. Check out this article for shim calcs... /www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billavista/PR-shaft/index2.html
