Ok hopefully I dont get yelled at too much for asking this question. Yes I did search and either the search engine doesnt work well or I am just dumb. But I couldnt find anything. I am about to purchase a Chrysler 8.25 from a 2001 to replace the Dana 35 in my 90. What do I need to do to make this work? From what I have heard it should be a farely easy swap?

Can you translate it?

ebrake thingy is the only thing you will need, i think. I grabed a 8.25 out of a 00 XJ and put it into my 90 xj witha 4.5". Every thing worked out and nothing has gone wrong with it yet. Kept my original ds as well

Yeah I knew about the basics like the ubolts and plates. I am not running a SYE so other than the swapping of the e brake lines the bolts and plates I should be fine?

You are just swapping in a rear axle right? I do not know where you are getting the axle from but see if you can grab that rear drive shaft specially if they are the same tranny transfer case or be prepared to get yours shortened or lengthened.

Your e brake cables are easy.............they will attach the same doesn't matter what axle you have............You just need to know how to do brakes. Been there, done that :spin1:

You might want to pick up new ubolts for the 8.25, the ubolt plates off of the 8.25, see if you can get those, but if not we can re-use yours by elongating the holes a little to fit the thicker tube.

It took me an Hour to swap out my D35 to my D44 single handed, Then I spent two hours screwing around with an out of round backing plate and a too short drive shaft..................so XJboy..........learn from my mistakes.

With two people it shouldn't take that long as long as you are prepared.

...........if all else fails I have a plasma cutter, a welder and BFH!!! :D

ubolts and plates are included.Doubt I can get the driveshaft. From the picture it is just the axle with the drums and leaf packs which I may use in addition to my add a leafs as I am dragging ass now that I took off the grill guard that was kepping the jeep level. Also skully you never said it you wanted to help or not?

? I said I can help ya :confused1 Let me know when you were thinking of doing this though as I need to prepare...........(informing the wife that is).

THis is not that hard of a swap. You want to change your leaf springs around too? Get them all set up ahead of time and it will make it feel like everything goes by faster.

Just let me know when.........and...... I will check my itinerary :read:

I am hopeping to pick the axle this weekend. The only reason I want to rebuild the leaf packs is because the leafs that come with the 8.25 seem to have a good arc left in them andine are basically dead. But once I get it I am in no rush to get it in I just want to buy the axle as soon as I can since he only wants ninety bucks for it

Yeah it does come with the leaf packs but they are the stock packs and I was thinking of just adding in my two add a leafs to make a less saggy bastard type pack since of course the 2001 springs are newer than my 90 springs

There's no point in grabbing the rear driveshaft - 01 used the 96+ t-case output, while the 90 is incompatible.

E-brake cables will swap directly in, which is good because the 01 had a different cable pull assembly, with unequal-length cables.

The mounting plate can be wallowed out if you can't get the C8.25 anyway. I'd recommend new u-bolts just because. Don't forget that the C8.25 uses 3" outer diameter tubes - bigger than the toothpicks used by the D35.

Yeah I remember about the outer diameter size difference I had a 8.25 in my 93, but didnt keep it when I bought the 90 I have now.

Ok so what do I need to do about the Rear Driveshaft situation. Someone mentioned earlier that they did the exact same swap and there was no issue?

Wrong, well right, but wrong. The way they sealed the output shaft was different. But the shaft itself is the same. There is do difference in the yoke on the driveshaft. The slip is still there, there just isn't a longer cone off the main tailcone. Instead, just the boot, but the driveshaft still slips on the same way. They just sealed the shaft at the main cone, so fluid doesn't spill out when you drop the shaft. But as you can see, the yoke on the end of the driveshaft remains the same.

Well from a some reasearch I have come up with some info. The rear driveshafts are different lengths as everyone has said, but i found out from some other web sites and here on the great NAXJA that the driveshaft length issue will be negated by the fact that I am lifted. So I think I will just try using the rear drivshaft I already have.
