Axel, locker, gears debate *long*

For those of you that don't know... I just moved up to 35s. I have an open 8.25 (27 spline) and D30 with stock gearing. I don't have a whole lot of money to spend on this stuff right now (if I did, I'd go buy a complete D44 from JeepersAndCreepers or something).
So anyway.... I have to gear (at least the rear - got a long roadtrip coming up in Jan), and I wanted 4.88s, but they're not available for the 8.25. So, now I dunno if I want to go with 4.56s or try to find a cheap axel and build it up a little before January 15th. If I stick with the 8.25, I want to convert to HD 29 spline axel shafts when I do the locker, but can't afford to do the gears, locker, and shafts all at once (not before my trip anyway).
Anyway, this is sounding way too much like a word problem.
I'm thinking, I'll just go with the 4.56s (front and rear right now), then buy a cheap automatic locker and some shafts a little later. I just wanna get some input.

To answer your question, if you spend any money on that 8.25 it will have been wasted if you decide to go with a different axle.
If you have a long road trip ahead why use your brand new(sorta) 35" MT/Rs? Get some el' cheapo 33s for now or use your old ones(unless they're bald).
JMO but I think you should save your money and do it right once.

Billy, I think that a D44 from a Grand Waggy would be a good donor axle for you. Or an XJ44, which will get you the right bolt pattern. I wouldn't spend the money to upgrade that 8.25" Keven drove on 3.55s and his 35s for a long time, so don't worry about your upcoming road trip. You have an automatic, you just won't be using your overdrive.

Also, I am still selling my 3rd member with the 4.56s and Detroit. You can get a housing cut to length from Currie for $269 and I have 31 Spline axles for it. One of them has a slight wobble to it, but you can build the whole thing for less than $1K, maybe a bit more with the disc brakes.

ill give you a d35! you can get 4.88 and more ground clearance! ill even shave it for ya!



i know somewhere that is sellin brand new 8.8's with disc brakes for $400 or something like that
 
Yeah, I think I'm just going to figure something else out for the trip and save for a real rear axel.

Hey Billy, if you want for your trip I will have some wheels and tires you could use, they are more like 32's and not very pretty but they would work. I will have my 35's by then and so they will sit around and you can use them if you want.
