AW4 pilot bushing (?)

We pulled the tranny out of my XJ this afternoon to swap in a salvage yard unit until I can figure out what's wrong with the current one. (It hardly moves in reverse and has no engine braking in manual first gear) When we got it loose from the engine and started pulling it down and back, we heard something fall in the bellhousing and roll out onto the floor. It looks like some kind of pilot bushing. It seems to fit in the back of the crankshaft, but I'm not sure which way it goes. One side has a nice machined "nub" on it while the other side just has a rounded mushroom-shaped bump. Which side goes into the end of the crankshaft?

I'd like to get this back up and running tomorrow, so any advice is appreciated...

Thanks in advance,

Chad

Those are older photos, right now the front end on mine is buried and I can't see the converter.which way

It very well may be a pilot bushing but sence your doing an auto it is nothing to worrry about alot of times manufactures will install items like that in all of there engines for easier assembly in the plants.

Is it brass or steel? Is there a hole through it? Sounds like the tip of the converter broke off.

It's steel, there's no hole through it, and looking at those pictures it most definitely is the tip of the torque convertor. I guess this could have been causing the noise that I thought was a cracked flexplate rattling. Now what the hell caused that to break off?? lol

Well the problem your haveing could very well be a bad torque converter and not the transmission.
