Average miles/tank

Winterbeater has a point. While all xj's may have tanks with the same physical volume, some were artificially limited to ~13 gallon fill-up capacity for reasons I have never understood. This coupled with other variables that determine the actual amount of fuel that can be crammed into a given tank by a given pump renders the subject meaningless from the get-go.

Absolutely none of my business and I have no idea why I posted in the first place.

mine gets to a 1/4 tank at around 225-230 or so.

I then usually get about 45 miles more out of it with a gallon or two to spare, so call it 275 miles per tank + a couple gallon reserve.

I tend to only see 16-17gallons go in it at a time.

I have to change out my thermostat, though, and then re-track my mpgs/miles per tank. My motor never gets above 150-175 since I put my alum. core radiator in. This, I think, is keeping the motor in "start-up" mode all the time. When I first got the car, I was getting 19-21mpg's.

that would equal about 325 miles per tank with a few gallons reserve.

I must have a small gas tank. I try not to let it get below 1/4 on the gauge, which is around 200 miles into it. Takes about 12 gallons at that point.

16.5 mpg
With an 89 you're going to have the old style metal clamshell tank with a plastic scuff plate wrapped around it, have you checked if the tank is caved in under the plastic? The old tanks were great that way because the plastic bounces back and fools you into thinking it's just fine.

My last tank I went 185 miles from completely full to below empty. This is with 35's and 3.55's. Most I have ever done was around 240 with 32's and 3.55's.

ouch, 35's with 3.55 gearing, that must not be fun to drive on the road. i assume you use 4lo when in 4wd.

are you using gps or did you swap out the speedo gear to find out the mileage? without a new speedo gear, the speedometer is off and so is the odometer.

.

you dont use 4 lo ALL THE TIME when in 4wd?!?... wow weather i ran 235's or 33's i always put my xj into 4 lo when wheeling, maybe i wheel different terrain than you do but i need all the help i can get offroad! its better to be in it and not need it than to need it and not be in it am i right?

no i dont, i have 4.10 with 31's with a manual trans. when in 4lo, its geared very very low. i can start in 4th gear without trouble or clutch slipping. 4lo in first gear gives me too much wheel spin in some cases. if you need 4lo all the time, your axle gearing is too tall.

My trip computer says 16.9mpg usually. When I fill up when the light comes on I put in 15 gallons in and usually hit 250 miles on a tank.

sorta... im 33's and 3.55's BUT i still get 19mpg on trip... my 4 high has always been a little too tall. it shifts too often for me, or bog's down and akes more strain than i wanna do in 4 high, for me in 4 low i can creep easier also keep in mind you have a 5 speed manual compared to my 4 speed auto, so our tranny gear ratios are different

if you lived in CA i'd take you for a ride in it to show you, but pa is kind of a drive. this guy i know had a manual tranny and 3.07's on 33's now that he switched to an auto i BELIEVE he is still running 3.07's on 33's talk about tall gearing

i also use 4 hi in the snow. i like low gearing, but 4lo is way too low to drive on the street in the snow.

when i regeared, i was not concerned about gas mileage. larger tires and manual trans with stock gearing sucks unless your concerned with top speed. after regearing, any problems with bogging down or having to downshift went away.

regearing for larger tires was hands down the best thing i did for drivability, on and offroad.

ok, let me correct myself... i use 4 high for typical driving off road, where mild 4wd may be needed. but as soon as i hit the rocky part of the trail, into 4 lo i go. but yanno my 4th gear in 4 low will do 35-40 mph... 4th gear is a long gear. but any kind of trail i hit where were creeping at 5-10 mph tops i'll put it into 4 low.

The only time i go in 4low is when i go through a gate keeper or v-notch. most of the other time im in 4 high. Through Nightmare and Last chance i used 4 hi except for the v notch.

In three pages of this thread, I've seen only one reference to replacing the O2 sensor, or the proper temp thermostat. Outside of the un-aerodynamic shape of these beasts, those two items are the most critical. If the vehicle has 100k miles or more, the O2 is done. Change it. They start to die, in some cases, in the 80k range.

also i get around 13MPG 6.5 lift 33x12.5 3.07 gears after market bumper with winch
Did you mention you are running an aw4?

why did you swap in axles with 3.07s AND 33s with... an aw4? Or did you just never regear after doing a manual to auto swap?

I'd get that fixed, even if it's just 3.55s it'll cost you like 200 at the you-pull-it and will probably give you a 3mpg boost at least, @ $3/gallon (socal prices? 2.50 around here, guessing 3) it'll take you less than 5 thousand miles to break even AND you'll get some torque back.
