Average miles/tank

why did you swap in axles with 3.07s AND 33s with... an aw4? Or did you just never regear after doing a manual to auto swap?

I'd get that fixed, even if it's just 3.55s it'll cost you like 200 at the you-pull-it and will probably give you a 3mpg boost at least, @ $3/gallon (socal prices? 2.50 around here, guessing 3) it'll take you less than 5 thousand miles to break even AND you'll get some torque back.

I just havent had the funds to regear yet after i did the transmission swap. I dont want to waste money on 3.55s. I want either 4.88 or 4.56. I plan on going 35s as soon as i gear it.

When it was stock with 225x75 tires I would get 300 miles before the low fuel lite came on.Now with 3 inch lift 31x1050 I get around 200 miles before the low fuel lite comes on.

That is all well and good (actually in your case bad), but the subject is miles per tank. Nobody wants to talk about miles per gallon. This is all guts and no glory! Run it dry to get the most miles. If you chicken out at 19.4 gallon fill-ups, you aren't playing this game. Run it dry, baby! :explosion

Winterbeater has a point. While all xj's may have tanks with the same physical volume, some were artificially limited to ~13 gallon fill-up capacity for reasons I have never understood. This coupled with other variables that determine the actual amount of fuel that can be crammed into a given tank by a given pump renders the subject meaningless from the get-go.

Absolutely none of my business and I have no idea why I posted in the first place.

Pelican has a point, about Winterbeaters point, about JeepFreaks point...Why bother with all that pesky math and stuff? Let's use the calendar instead. I just found a receipt in my Jeep, and get this...The last time I filled up was late August. CAN YOU BELIEVE IT??!!!!! I've gone almost FOUR months without filling up! That's pretty good, huh?

what are you using to get the mileage reading for the increased tire size? gps, corrected speedo/odometer gear, or nothing?

Last summer, I got 6 month's on 1/2 tank.

Now I fill up my winterbeater every week. :wow:

2001 XJ Sport, 4.0 engine, auto., 4WD, 120k miles. 19 hwy/13-17 city. I just wish I could fill the stupid tank. During the winter I'm lucky to get 200 miles out of a tank. Have never been able to put in more than 17 gals.

That's because you don't run it out of gas all the way. What are you afraid of, highway muggers? :roflmao:

any try filling up your tank with the nozzle on the first click in... if you squeeze the handle all the way before you lock it in place the bubbles in the fuel will trip the nozzle before its full... it takes longer but i always " bury" the needle that way.

I had a '95 4.0, same problem. I bury the needle when I fill it. Usually will take 2 extra gallons after the first time the nozzle clicks off. I try to avoid running it dry so I don't damage the fuel pump. Might try it though as I'm due for a fuel filter R&R.

Sorry to necro this thread, but here goes: 1991 Laredo 4.0L, AW4, Thorley Header replacement for a cracked OE exhaust manifold in '05 (may also now have a crack, as I ran it for almost a year without a flex-tube on the front-pipe), Home-Brew Cold Air Intake w/ Amsoil EaA 6"x9" Cone Air Filter, new Aftermarket Coolant Temp Sensor, switchable OE Intake Air Temp Sensors on intake manifold & on Cold Air Intake tube (both may need replacing as both are more than 10 years old), OE Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor (may be a little inaccurate due to age), Aftermarket O2 Sensor (may also be a little sluggish due to age & manufacturer's design flaws), OE Throttle Position Sensor (may also be problematic due to age), fuel injectors replaced recently w/4-hole reman'd Bosches, 3.73 estimated Gear Reduction in F&R Diffs (put in by previous owner?), 31X10.5R15 Mastercraft C/T tires @ 35-40 PSI for pavement driving, all lubes replaced with Amsoil Full Synthetic (Power Steering included), catalytic converter is OE (no apparent blockages when tested for back-pressure), muffler & Tail-pipe are replacements (also good), engine compression not yet tested, all oil leaks taken care of as best I can. :lecture:

Fuel economy per 15 gallon average tank-up ranges between 180-195 miles. Would prefer around 225-240 per 15 gallon tank-up. I'm kinda curious as to how much on the right track you think I'm on with all that I've listed as possible problems & fixes for my currently-poor per-tank fuel economy.:dunno:

99 4.0L ax-15 4x4 np231 4 door 8.25 d30 3.07 stock tires 198,000.

350 ~ 17.5 city 430 ~ 22 highway

I would imagine this is what a healthy XJ should be running. I recently was having some poor mpg, but not throwing any codes and replaced my 02 about a week ago and all is back to normal again.

here is food for thought, fill your tank up, then reset your trip meter, then drive it. See how many gallons it takes to fill it back up. Then you can see almost exactly how much gas you have used and use your mileage to figure your mpg, assuming your odo is accurate in the first place, I bet nobody or at least most people in this whole post has a 100% accurate odometer so at best were all approximating.
