I am going to be streching my cj-5 about 22 inches. and I want to swap in an automatic tranny behind the v-6 225. Any ideas what tranny will work, or adapters needed.

TH400 will work, they did have a quadradrive, I *think* it's called, as an option. Start looking at full sized Waggoneers for donors. There was also CJ's with autos from the factory with the 225 motors in them, jeepsters had them also as an option so some of the parts should be 'over the counter' dealer items or NAPA type replacement parts.

67-71 C101's (Jeepster-Commando) with the 225 were available with the TH400 behind them, you'll need the tcase adapter (though the factory one is known to be pretty weak), and I think you have to use a d20 tcase as there isn't a 29 tooth gear available that I know of that will match the spline count on the output shaft of the 400(check with novak though to be sure). If your stretching and such I doubt your keeping the 2 piece axle offset 44 anyways.... you'll just need a centered 44. If you can find a 71 or so C101 rust heep as a donor that has an auto you'll have everything you need including rear axle. There's lots of info here - http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/knowledge_gateway.htm
Those guys do Jeeps only and make top notch stuff, if you don't find the answers there call them and talk to Eric, he has a V6 Cj himself and knows them very well.

Now I don't know this to be absolutely true but I had always heard that CJ-5s were to short to put an automatic tranny in. Because the rear drive shaft would be so short.

He's stretching it 22" so that isn't an issue.... it would be doable at stock length but he wouldn't be able to go over about 2" with a suspension lift and it would eat ujoints pretty quick even with a dbl cardan shaft if he drove on anything other than pavement. It's been done by a few guys over on the Early CJ5 & dauntless V6 board and it worked "OK".
