Auto 1998 XJ stuck in first gear

Re: Auto 1998 XJ stucked in first gear

I'm fairly certain it is the second to last one... my last NSS didn't do squat with the backup lights! I could have opened a beer on it without it coming off the darn shaft, though.

Yep, I tried everything I knew to get mine off, even profanity and pleading with God.
Eventually I think I used a combination of a big screwdriver, a file (which I broke) and a hammer (this is how the file broke), though I wouldn't recomend that to anyone...

Thanks for the info!

I made use of both those methods, and even combined them. Nothing worked, I ended up chiseling it off and buying a new one.

Re: Auto 1998 XJ stucked in first gear

So I've been offered an 88 MJ that has this stuck in first syndrome. Is the culprit likely the output speed sensor?

Unplug the TCU (under the dash, passenger's side) then drive it shifting manually.

With the TCU unplugged you will have 1st in 1-2; 3rd in 3; 4th in D; reverse, neutral and park. If that is what you get, then your problem is electrical in nature. If not, then the problem is a little more serious as it will be hydraulic/mechanical in nature.
