Saga,
I have no doubt that an unused K&N Flows better than a paper filter. What I call bunk is that an internally stock 4.0 needs all that air, if it did our accellerometer and dragstrip testing would show more improvement.
I think someone else earlier had a very valid point that variances in the filter's used can have alot to do with it - not to mention variances in the engines used and the conditions under which they were tested. For instance, perhaps the viscosity of the oil used in a K&N changes with the temperature enough that it flows mroe air at higher temperatures? Perhaps some 4.0's have just a little more lift in the valves and need a little more air? Or perhaps some filters let through more dirt than others? Just a thought....

Toz, while a clean stock paper filter only poses a mild restriction to engine breathing, it gets a lot worse when it's dirty. A K&N will still outflow a clean stock paper element even when it's dirty and not be restrictive. The point is that there might be little difference in HP if you compare clean paper element with clean K&N, but the difference in HP will be greater if they're both dirty.
Remember also that the stock airbox only has a small front inlet tube and that's another restriction. Throttle response improves if you enlarge it. It's the difference between trying to suck from a large straw instead of a small one. You can suck air from a large straw more quickly.
How about the Tru Flow filter....it's made out of foam. They were at the Off-Road show at the Fairplex last month.
I don't have a link or address. Anyone familiar with them?
See Ya!
Curt (aka Xtreme XJ)
Not to drag this thread up again but doing a search for "foam air filters" and came up on this. Here' s the link for True Flow Foam Filters . My K&N tore on the rubber frame and was letting dust pour into the engine so I am looking for options. I ran foam on my dirt bikes, where it seems most were against running K&N, and think foam should work great for the XJ. Check out their test on Paper vs. Gauze vs. Foam, kinda makes you wonder. Thoughts??
I took a brief glance at the article posted, and I have to say this: I have a K&N and I every time I recharge it, I look inside my air tube, and grab a white rag and run it inside, and I really don't have any crap in there. I also clean my T-body every other time and that's also looking good.
In general, there is just so many things that can go wrong with a test like that, and also in order for that test to be valid, it has to be done multiple times (ok... a lot more then multiple) in a controlled environment and then someone can really publish their findings and have them worth something.
I have been running the amsoil foam filter for almost a year now. I am very pleased. I can clean it, oil it, and throw it back on. It's no different than my dirt bike.

This caught my attention as when I was installing the Banks header I noticed ALOT of fine dust in my TB and intake passages. It appeared to be coming from the peremiter of the K&N versus through the gauze as there was a tear in the rubber frame. I just do not know when and how the tear started. I never liked the way the frame does not sit tight and you have to use the grease to make sure it seals thouroughly. Either way went back to paper until I figure out which way to go. Can say throttle response seems longer now, but that is based on feel and not sceintific.
