Are 4.10s too deep for me?!

Jeep had them as standard equipment on XJ's with tow packages with stock height tires. 4.10's will give you a lot more accelleration. The biggest mileage issue is if you can keep your foot off of the skinny pedal. Around town, it should help your mileage. On the road at 75, it might hurt your mileage, depending on what type of terraing. Here in Colorado, it helps both street and highway if driven right.

My brothers jeep runs 4.10's with 30 inch Goodyears, AW4 4.0 and he gets 20.5mpg on the highway, and 15.9mpg in the city. He got his figures from a progrmmer linked to his laptop on the front seat. (Has to be pretty accurate)his does really well off road too, he can handle a little of everything (given he only has 30 inch tires) I say its worth it.....

I know this is a year old but...
I'm looking for 4.10s for my jeep. Im running 235/75r15's on road and i got som 27x9.50 15 ssr's for offroad. would it be more cost effective to buy 2 junkyard axels out of a 4 banger rather than regear? I'm just looking for a little more grunt for pulling a little trailer. Thanks a bunch.

You could do that yeah, although I'd try to find a stronger rear end and re-gear it - then find a 4 cyl front end. See if you can swing a 29 spline 8.25 or a dana 44 .. in the long run you will probably end up going bigger and be happy you did.

Just remember that if you wheel you will suffer from twoinchitis... everyone says they will never get it but its contagious, you will get it and will say.. I want 33s and 2 inches more lift. I know I was adimant a year ago I would not get twoinchitis but alas I have it now. Fortuently I got it before I gears and put 4.56s in my heep for when I make the jump from 32s to 33s. just think long and hard about commiting to a specific gear size. running a little deeper for 32s than I will need will save me money in the long run and agrivation of regearing again.

.... The biggest ill ever go with this truck is 31s, but right now I have 225s on it. Spring I will have 30" (NOT 31s!)...

HAHA, Famous last words... I used to say the same thing.

After 5 years with roughly 4 inches of lift and 31's... I just bought an 8.8 and getting it ready for some 35's!!

As for running at 2,800-3,000.

I do it all the time. I get the best gas mileage when I keep the RPM's between 2,500 and 3,000. I have 31's an auto and 3.55 (not for long!) and in 3rd gear cruise at 75mph ~2,800 RPM. OD is about 87mph ~2,600 RPM. Get 21 mpg driving like this. 200K on my engine (over 100K from me) and no ill effects from cruising around 3K rpm's.

Well this sounds like a textbook case of twoinchitis. My diagnosis.... add two inches to your lift and tires and call your local offroad shop in the morning.
