It was 7/8"-14 UNC for the longest - I don't know if (or when,) it changed, but I'd probably get nuts in 7/8"-14, M20, and M22 and try them all for fitment.

Just happen to have my old steering box next to me here at work.
7/8-14. Checked with micrometer and 60* thread pitch gauge.
