I am looking at Grand Cherokee for the wifey. It has no plates and no title, just paperwork from the auction he bought it from. Anyone know what it requires to register a vehicle like that? Thanks.

Whats auction company? Most of the auction companies take DMV fees and do the registration during purchase, so you would leave with a temp registration in the windshield . Title & plates will be mailed from DMV.

It is a private party that said they bought it from an Auction and had not transferred it into their name yet. It sounded a little fishy to me. Thanks.

DONT DO IT! Many auction vehicles mask the fact that there are state penalties for unpaid registration, and often in other states. If the auction is not a dealership, it can be even worse. Before you bid $100 and find out you owe DMV $1,000, you can run the VIN number at the DMV, BUT, you are also liable for unpaid sales tax from previous owners who may have bought but not transferred. I am a licenced dealer, and once in a while would take a trade in that had so much in penalties that I would either give it to charity, or have it transported to a state where there were no penalties on that particular vehicle. DONT BUY A VEHICLE WITHOUT A TITLE AND A DMV PRINTOUT UNLESS YOU BUY IT FROM A CALIFORNIA DEALER AND HAVE AN AGREEMENT IN ADVANCE IN WRITING ON THE COST OF THE REGISTRATION!

IT IS NOT WORTH TAKING A CHANCE!

my xj is actually an auction truck it cost me 5000 grand at first in total i think i paid 7000 or 8000 for it then it failed smog twice so ya dont go to auctions or even deal with vehicles that were ever part of an auction they just suck

I work at a auction company for semi trucks and almost half if not more have past DMV fees and are mostly sold for out of state delivery, some fees are as high as 10k!!!

I would check it out very carefully!
