The stock air flow is pretty restrictive I want to cut at least one side of the airbox off will this cause any problems. I have an 87 4.0. There seems to be a sensor at the initial intake opening is this a maf sensor or can I take it off and cut the whole side out?

yues you can but why?

i have done this on a few other cars.... i cut the box everywhere except where the clamps hold it together, and where it bolts down..... there was alot more flow, but its all hot air..... i dont know how much it helped, but it made the other cars sound cool

leave the sensor alone ,it will run like garbage and get horrible mileage..... if it runs at all.... i would leave the top part of the box alone, just cut off the sides of the air box

Ok I just went and looked at it and the "sensor" I was talking about seems to be the opener for the inlet that lets in the hot air from the exhaust manifold is this really necessary?

that inlet is there to aid in heating the engine quicker in cold weather... will not effect anything other than getting up to opperating temp within a certain amount of time

Well I took pics of before and after but cant seem to find my photo loader/charger for the digi. I'll look some more and post em tomorrow. I drove around for a couple hours and in stop and go it runs 10 degrees hotter but seems to run 5-10 degrees cooler at speeds above 45:-) As far a performance I notice a slight increase in power from 1st-3rd gear range. I'd say w/ a k&n you'd get 3.5 horsepower maybey 4.5 if you insulated everything.

Thanx dr. dyno ive been checken up on your site for the past year now but wanted more than 50% more flow than stock and it has made a noticable difference. You put out great work and thurough write-ups thanx for all your contributions to the xj community. I'm at work now but will post airbox pics when im off.
