Anyone break an 8.8 shaft?

I'm just curious if anyone has actually broken a stock 8.8 shaft? I'm not out to start a pissing match, advantages or disadvantages, bad that they're c-clip, etc. I want to hear FIRST-HAND from anybody who has broken one. I BENT one at the flange while repeatedly landing on my right rear wheel while trying to get out of one of the hot tubs in Moab and recently installed a pair of Dutchman 4340 chrome-moly axle shafts.

I was once fussed at for a similar mistake, the 4340 alloy is too brittle to make a flanged axle. The alloy your axles are made of is 1541-H.

There a few pics of broken superior shafts around, so it does happen.

STROKER broke one at NACFEST last year, there was a pic in the carnage section.

What is the point of this thread if you've already upgraded to 1541? Yes, people have broken plenty of 31 spline 9" and 8.8 shafts, even 1541 shafts.

What's the point of responding if you don't have anything positive to say?

I prefaced my post by saying I WAS JUST CURIOUS.

Is there a rule in the bylaws that responses have to be positive?

If you have a right to post a stupid thread, I think I'm perfectly within my rights to point it out!

Oh, and BTW CRASH, I still say the perfect rig has to be sitting on 44" Ground Hawgs.

Is there a rule in the bylaws that says you have to be an ass?

While this isn't the most technical thread, I said it was strictly out of curiosity. I never have understood why someone sees a thread, thinks it's stupid, and feels compelled to reply anyways. If you think a thread is stupid, wouldn't it be easier to just not reply and let it die?

And let my favourite Jeep site degenerate into a pile of stupid, useless threads?

Why would I want to do that? NAXJA is known for our good tech, and we do all we can to keep it that way.

I mean, before posting, did you really believe that no one had ever broken a 31 spline shaft? Had you tried a search to confirm your belief? All I'm saying is, try to add something to the discussion. I'd have been thrilled with a question such as "what is the torque rating difference between an OEM 8.8 shaft and a 1541h shaft?" Instead, you started this thread with a silly question and then fibbed about the kind of shaft that you bought from Dutchman.

Incidently, to save this thread with some actual tech, I offer the following:

An OEM 31 spline shaft is rated at 5,600 - 5,800 ft lbs.

A 1541h induction hardened shaft is rated at 7,000 ft lbs.

That's about a 20% difference in strength.

He might not have answered your question with a kiss, but he did answer it didn't he?

One more reason the "good tech" people at NAXJA don't have my money for a membership....the good tech often comes with a dose of attitude.

Thanks Crash for continuing to make people feel stupid for asking an interesting question, just because it's not interesting to you.

Jackass.

I try my best.

Keep up the freeloading, looks like it's working well for you.

perhaps the attitude is spawned from a bunch of freeloaders starting useless threads...

i broke one of my buddys, on 37's spooled....right after he yelled "Its not yours....hammer down!" :D

that is funny as hell, I would like to see a video of that!

easy with the freeloaders comment, everyone contributes something. even if that something is frustration, clutter, etc.

And yet, somehow, we manage to survive.

Skin, go thick or go JU.
