Not XJ related but the wifes 2002 WJ airbag light has been on for a while and I am tired of looking at it, not to mention the system is not working properly. I called the stealership and they want $125 to just look at it. Does anybody know any one that has one and can diagnose the problem? I don't wanna chase the problem by throwing parts at is, the cruise, horn and so on work, so not sure if its the clock spring, also swapped out air bag control module and that didn't turn the light off.

Thanks, Eric

100% of the WJ's Iv'e looked at (I recondition about 4-6 a month) that had an airbag light on, was the clockspring causing the light. I've shortcut my diag to about two minutes.

:nono:Firstly, I am a professional Auto tech (25 years) and I know what I am doing. this is intended specifically for the Jeep products.
I am not meaning the following to be instructions on how do diagnose your airbag. I do not condone the following steps to a non-professional
.

This operation mimics the special tool that Chrysler uses to diag the problem.
You need a small diameter paper clip, and a Phillips bit driver.

  • Disconnect the battery positive cable. You can wait two minutes for cap discharge. You can speed up the process by grounding the disconnected positive cable.
  • Remove the lower steering column cover.
  • Disconnect the yellow connector from the clockspring.
  • Bend the paperclip into a U shape and carefully insert the clip into the yellow connector you just unplugged.
  • Turn the key the on position. (Yes, do this first)
  • Reconnect the battery. No boom? That's a good thing!
  • Now go start the engine.

The AB light should come on, stay on for about 10-15 seconds and then go off and stay off.

If it does stay out, YAY, you get to change the clockspring. Have fun getting that steering wheel off. :)

Digger, that sounds super sketchy, but what the hell i'll give it a shot! If that doesn't work, flores I may hit you up to look at it with the Solus. But from reading snap on's sight not sure if it will read the air bag codes.

Boy I'm a dork.

My previous instructions only works WITH a scan tool.

It changes the code from "driver squib circuit open" to "drivers squib circuit shorted"
verifying the clockspring as bad.

Sorry about that... it was a long day.

Also, the '02 has 2 squib circuits in the clockspring

when you get it connected to a scan tool, and IF there is a drivers squib open fault
(one, or two, or both)
short squib one: black/lightblue to dark green/light blue(pin 1 to pin2)
short squib two: tan/lb to orange/lb (pin 3 to pin 4)

that will give you a squib (#) circuit shorted code.

No problem. I think since the mrs and the kids ride in this thing I may just spring for a shop, not a dealer, to take a look at it. I did swap out the clockspring with a used one so the I have no idea of it's history, and the light now stays on for 6-7 seconds at start up then shuts off for a split second and comes right back on.
