I had a 79 FJ40 before I got my XJ. I had the stock I6 & 4 speed. It was slower than sin, but nevertheless really fun to drive on account of excess low end torque.
I was building it with my sights set on the Hammers, but at some point during the build I realized it was just too heavy & too dated for really tough trails.
The toughest trail I took it on was the Rubicon, & while I didn't really have any trouble, it sure was a lot easier when I returned 2 years later in my XJ. If I were only running moderately difficult trails like the Rubicon, I'd probably sale my XJ & get another FJ40.
One good thing about FJ's is that they appreciate. I bought mine for $4,000 & sold it 5 years later for $7,500.

Well, lets start with the statement that anything can be built up. Stock wise, or with little buildup I would put my money on an XJ over a landcruiser. Last year when I ran Rubicon, I was there during the Rubithon (yota event). We had in our group a guy open open with 4.56's on 33's and he ran circles around landcruisers that were better built then him.
The best breakage I have seen on a yota was the flange broken off at the pinion literally stranding the vehicle on the trail as when they were trying to move it forward the pinion would go inwards and seize things up. End result the rig had to be pushed backwards (rotation either sucked the pinion in or pushed it out) to make way for others. When I asked on the yota forum whatever happened to the rig that had broken like that I was asked which day and which time of the day as it seems that was a fairly common breakage for them

I agree with kejtar that for stock to medium built XJs are far superior in performance, but if you're talking about 37s or bigger I would rather start with a FJ40, though there would be very little Cruiser left when I was done.

Ive had 3 of them. 67,71 and 75. 74 thay changed some stuff for the better. If my memory serves me here. 2F (258cu) from 237. 4 speed from 3, barn doors in rear. The axles are rated as Dana 60s basically. Cant remember what years had non rotating valves so they burned prior to that, all 3 of mine got valve jobs. Watch for rust in the rear sections, common on them from to little nickle in the metal mix. Bad brake boosters causing massive vacume leaks and poor running( played hell tryin to figuire that one out on mine). My buddy still has his 71 and has gone thru 2 rebuilds in 100 miles due to shit parts and nobody doing it right, so he put in a crate 350. Parts are pricy and some junk quality. I recall 10/12 mpg at best. Overall there pretty cool and bullet proof. Dont flame me here but a CJ5 weighs with soft top about 3500lbs and a cruiser at 4500. HD but heavy is not always good(sand). Check out Spectre offroad or TLC or do a search for parts and resto etc.

hmmmm......I'm thinkin that another XJ is soundin better all the time, but they to have there weaknesses. I looked at an 85 grand wagoner on the way into town a few minutes ago, but it was leakin alot of oil. So I passed on that.

My sons friend got one couple months ago, he's got an aluminum nose coming that will be replaceing the hood, fenders and cowl. Thing is built like a tank, thats some heavy metal on that body. Got a rear heater so there are hot water lines running along the passenger side hump to an exchanger/blower in the back, sideways facing rear seats. Lot of CJ aftermarket parts fit it too

I´ve always liked the looks, but have also seen more than a few go turtle. Shortly after they first came out, somebody would roll one, most every weekend at Gorman.
I know you can roll anything, if you make a mistake or get stupid, but the F-40, just seemed a bit better at it than most (with the hardtop).

Total thread hijack, but I think the 98-94? FZJ80 is dead sexay. Add a smidge of lift, slightly taller/grippier tires... Even being 7+ years old, it's IMO the best luxury SUV ever made.
