I have a better story. Couple of years ago I went to a local used car lot to check out what sounded like a real deal on a '98 Sport 6-cy; 5-speed. Got to the lot and see a clean looking XJ with a 5-speed, but base rims and no Sport markings. (It had decals for some special surfer package, and I still don't know if it was a factory package or after-market).
Sales dude comes out, unlocks vehicle, hmmmm ... no tach, idiot lights! Pop the hood -- 4-cyl.
"Ah, excuse me but didn't your ad say this was a 6-cylinder?"
Yeah, it is."
"Okay, why are there only 4 spark plugs?"
Believe it or not, the guy goes to the driver's side of the engine and starts looking for the missing, non-existent plugs and wires. He said "It was a 6-cylinder when we bought it!"
Yeah, right. It was a shame. The price would have been a steal for a 6-cyl Sport, but it was a bit high for a 4-cyl SE. They wanted $6500. I offered $6000 and they wouldn't take it.
