another soft top question or 2 related thread

i know there have been quite a few of these threads and a couple of members have had some custom tops made when they chopped their roofs, i just have a somewhat new/different question.

has anyone looked at other vehicles with removable hard/soft tops that may be similar in size to a xj? i know there are a handful of rides out there that have them, so i was thinking of taking some measurements and seeing if any might actually fit (after obviously cutting the xj up a little).

my xj is a 2k1 and is in decent condition overall so actually cutting off the roof seems a little drastic, but at the same time if i could get a clean and well fitting soft top that would be awesome. i am just wondering if i'd need a full interior cage or if i could have a shop fab some rear supports to tighten up that area and make the pop rivets for a top to go on.

another route i'd like to do if the actual removable top doesn't work is a rag top type sunroof. i really loved that tonneau(sp?) top from the toyota truck that guy did to his xj. i just would like to keep my daily driver clean at the same time and wouldn't want a full interior cage so i wonder if a few support bars could be done on the roof around it would be feasable. just thoughts and i'm sure there are tons of people who want to do this too, and tons that say just buy a wrangler (which i considered a few weeks ago with their employee pricing deals to rid the lots of the 06's)...but i'd like to keep my cherokee and just make it how i want it.

any input?

Best I can do is a YJ bikini.

It's no good wheeling with it on, though.
Because, it's too nice wheeling without it.
'Bout the only time I have it on is when it's reaaly raining hard.

damn, it looks like you REALLY have some fun with that thing!!

i am looking more towards customizing my xj but having it look like it came with the top from the factory in a nice clean way...i don't really offroad at this time, so i guess it would be for looks and function by enjoying (what's left of) the summer time.

Thanks.

Amazingly, it still fits!
Just a bit baggy.:thumbdn:

I fabbed my own supports. In order to use a pre-made top, you need to make sure all the snaps are in the correct spots, and everthing is exact. Easier to have one made.
